Berry describes Judith as an eighteen-year-old, that has bright blue-green eyes (2) and long blonde hair (90) with a personality of cautiousness (61), embarrassment (15) and shyness (26). Judith thinks that because she only has 1/2 of a tongue, she will never be able to speak again. The actions Judith takes are remarkable, from the beginning of the story she is characterized as bright, happy, and outgoing. (3). In the end of the book, she starts to become less of everything (275)

Berry describes Lukas as a nineteen-year-old with a broad-angular face with dark brown eyes and short light brown hair. (25, 15). Lukas is described being very caring (19), thoughtful, (76) and considerate. (56) Lukas thinks that everybody hates him because of what his father (who was presumed dead) did to Lottie and Judith Lukas goes to trial because the townsfolk think that he is responsible for what happened to Lottie and Judith / they think they know that he knew his father was alive. (230)

The main setting of the story is Judith's house where she spends most of her time. The house is described as a cabin, "[t]he home had an eerie look to it standing there, with all the dead field surrounding it, the little bit of candle light shone through the window gave it more of an abandoned feeling, other than my house." Figurative Language
"In the early morning, I rise before my chores need doing and walk out far into the woods, over crackling pathways of fallen leaves, to Father's rock" (135)
This is imagery. Berry uses this to describe the way the leaves fall and die, how they break and crunch when you step on them. It makes you imagine the leaves and the way they sounds.
