Ginger Jenkins was horrified when her
parents told her they were moving to a new
town. Her dad got a new job in Morningside.
He just kept calling it an “adventure”. To
Ginger it was anything but an adventure.
Adventures were supposed to be fun and
exciting, moving was scary and definitely
not at all fun.

As much as Ginger wanted to hate her new
house, she couldn't. It was so big and just
what her mom had always wanted. Moving
wasn't quite as bad as she thought it would
be so far.

Once Ginger saw her new school, she knew
she was going to love it here. There was a
huge park, that she couldn't wait to play at
and her teacher, Mrs. Swan, even had a pet
hamster! She could not wait for her first
day.

Ginger's first day of school was almost
everything she expected, but it had only
been one hour. Soon the students were
paired and Ginger had to be partners with a
boy named Louis. Every time she tried to
talk to him he would laugh and then whisper
to the girl, Brittany, who sat next to him.

Ginger tried to get in on their jokes, but
they just gave her a blank stare. Then they
looked at each other and laughed even
harder. This day was taking a turn for the
worst.

By lunch Ginger knew what Brittany and
Louis were laughing about. It was her crazy,
out of control, fire red, hair. Ginger had
always liked her hair, it made her different
from most of the other kids. Now she wish
she had brown or blond hair like everyone
else in her class. She could not wait for this
day to be over.

When Ginger got home from school she
looked in the mirror for a long time. What
was wrong with her hair and why did it
matter to the kids at school what color it
was? Finally decided she would ask her mom
what to do.

When Ginger came downstairs her mom was
in the kitchen making supper. She could tell
something was wrong, so she took her and
her brother into the living room and they
sat on the couch and talked about
everything that had happened at school.

Her brother told her he liked her red hair
and that it reminded him of a carrot. Her
mom told her she needed to keep her head
up and show the kids at school what being
different was really all about.

As her mom made breakfast the next
morning, Ginger was making plans for what
to say to the bullies at school. Until finally
she figured it out.

When Ginger got to school she walked
straight up to Brittany and Louis. She told
them how many people actually had red
hair, proving she wasn't the only one. She
also said she didn't care if they didn't like
her because she liked herself and that is all
that really mattered.
