A long time ago in France, people were having a very hard time. They were starving and the king and queen did not seem to care. They allowed their people to starve and suffer.

In return, many people tried to make the king and queen listen to them more forcefully. The king and queen got scared and soon rumors spread that they were going to send armies to try to contain the angry citizens.

The people then decided to go against the king and queen! They stole weapons by attacking the prison Bastille and used these weapons to defend themselves against the king's army. This was the beginning of the French Revolution...

After the people began this revolution and stood up for themselves, a little bit of progress was made. The king, King Louis XVI, accepted and a new constitution that gave him less power than before. However, he still wasn't much help and many issues still existed in France.

Soon, other countries became worried that French citizens would go against the king and queen again. These countries were Austria and Prussia. They attempted to help King Louis get back his power.

The French citizens were not happy that their king wanted more power. So the monarchy was overthrown when radicals took over and a democratic republic was created. This was called the National Convention. They decided to declare war on Austria and Prussia, drafting many soldiers to defend France.
