The formation of our solar system all started 

with one massive explosion, the big bang. 

Happening 10-20 billion years ago, this was 

the start of the universe and our solar system.

Stars and galaxies began to form 300 million 

years after the big bang, but it wouldn't be 

until 5 billion years ago that our solar system 

and sun was formed.

Our solar system formed from a 

giant rotating cloud of gas and 

dust, known as a protoplanetary 

disc. The sun formed at the center 

and planets gradually formed around 

the sun in a process known as 

accretion. 

Our sun was formed from a cloud of 

hydrogen mixed with small amounts of 

other substances. The sun and the rest of 

the solar system formed a giant, rotating 

cloud of gas and dust known as the solar 

nebula. It later collapsed because of its 

intense gravity. The collapse caused it to spin 

fast and flattened into a disk. Most material 

was pulled tward the center to form the sun.
