His whole life, Buddy
the bee had watched
all the grown up bees
bring pollen back to
the hive for their
families and friends.
Buddy was always too
small to go on pollen
trips. “When you’re
older and bigger,”
they’d say.

One day he decided. He
would go out of the hive and
get pollen for his family.
And they would be so proud
of him. Then they would
never say he wasn’t big
enough or old enough to get
pollen.

So Buddy flew out of the hive. He had rarely left the hive
before, and the world outside was so big and bright! With so
many new things to see and do. But he had to get the pollen.
That’s what he had to do.

Buddy flew far away
from the hive, over the
hills and the river, when
he finally found a big
patch of beautiful
flowers. There were so
many different ones,
but Buddy choose the
one that was the
biggest flower of all,
right in the middle of
the all the others.

Buddy landed on the
flower, and it was
covered in pollen!
This was perfect!
More for him to
bring back home! So
he got as much as he
could hold between
his legs, and flew
off, back towards
the hive.

Just after he crossed the river, he started to feel how
heavy the pollen was. It was so much! He could barely hold
it up. He started to drop lower and lower and lower until
finally, PLOP! The pollen dropped right down into the
grass, where it disappeared.

“Oh no!” he said.
“Now I will never
be able to bring
pollen back to the
hive.” Disappointed
and exhausted, he
flew back to the
hive, barely able to
hold himself up.

When he got home, his mother saw he looked sad.
“What’s wrong Buddy?” she asked. “I tried to go out
and get pollen today, but it was too heavy to bring
back home.” Buddy looked very sad.

“Oh Buddy, why didn’t
you ask for help?
There’s nothing wrong
with needing someone
to help you. Come on,
lets go get that pollen.”
So Buddy and his
mother flew away from
the hive to the flowers.
