"Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen." Steven Wright
Verne Jacques was a world-famous marine biologist. Tomorrow he was planning on taking his crew to explore the deepest part of the ocean. He believed that there were many species of marine life that had yet to be discovered. The mission was said to be too dangerous by many as many of his crew members decided not to go at the last minute. Regardless, at 5 in the morning, Verne's adventure would begin.
Verne boarded the ship at 5 a.m. sharp. He was the first one there and so he drank his coffee as he waited for the rest of his crew to arrive. An entire hour had passed and still no crew members had shown up. Little did he know that there was one eager person who was already on board, his 13 year-old daughter Jules. She had hidden out on the ship overnight hoping to join the adventure.
Eventually a couple of very reluctant crew members showed up for duty. Disappointed by the lack of manpower, Verne decided to set sail anyways. Their mission would take them to parts of the ocean that had never been seen by man. After years of sending robotic submarines to take videos and pictures of the abyss, it was time for Verne and his crew to see the wonders for themselves.
"Bonjour gentleman. Are you ready for an exciting adventure?" "I guess so" one of the crew members said. "I don't know what we're going to find down there. Could be nothing or it could be something really exciting like giant squids or sea monsters. I'm just kidding around. Hey! Where are you going?"
"Giant squids?"
"Seamonsters?"
"Mon dieu!"
"Bonjour Papa!"
"Jules?"
A disappointed Verne stared out into the vast ocean feeling defeated. His lifelong dream of discovering new species in the deepest regions of the ocean wasn't going to become a reality. "Papa?" Verne was shocked to see his young daughter when he turned around. "Jules? What are you doing here?" "I was hoping to be part of your mission. I know how long you have wanted to explore and discover the many secrets of the sea."
"Please Papa! I have learned so much about the ocean from watching you." "I don't know Jules. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking you on such a dangerous excursion." "Hey, do you feel water drops?" "Oh no! The ship has sprung a leak! Quickly, let's see if we can stop it!" When the pair arrived in the galley, they were up to their hips in water. They needed to leave the ship as soon as possible but the cowardly crew members had taken the dingy leaving Verne and Jules with only one option.
A giant hole formed in the hull of the ship which was on the verge of sinking. Verne led his daughter to the pod that was to be used for the voyage underwater. They escaped as the ship slowly began to sank. "Let's go home Jules." "But don't you want to try out your submarine thingy?" "It's too dangerous." "But...." "But nothing. We're going home."
Verne kept pressing the red button to make the pod go. Instead, the vessel was locked on some very specific coordinates. Ready or not, the pair were going to explore the deepest part of the ocean. Verne and Jules were about to embark on deep sea voyage that had never been attempted before. Perhaps it had been tried before but nobody had ever returned to tell about it. That worried Verne. "Okay, here we go Jules. Are you ready?" "Um, I think I have to pee." "Now you tell me."
"Wow! Look at all the different kinds of fish. They're so colourful and pretty." "Life is so beautiful in the ocean. That's why I'm so dedicated to learning more about it and the many species that call it home." Without warning the pod started to shake. "Oh no!" "What's wrong Papa?" "I don't know Jules. The pod is pretty sturdy so we should be safe in here." Verne and Jules continued to get knocked around inside the pod before they found out what was causing it.
It was a family of whales. "The babies are so cute Papa!" "Do you know what a group of whales is called Jules?" "A pod?" "Tres bien! And the babies are called calves. "Whales are the gentle giants of the ocean" Jules said as a big smile formed on Verne's face. The fact that his daughter was so interested in something he was so passionate about filled him with joy. "Looks like we're ready to go even deeper" Verne said as the pod began its descent. "Au revoir whale family!"
"Sharks! Papa I am afraid!" "Don't worry Jules. We're safe in our pod. Plus not all sharks are dangerous to people. In fact, some of them are more afraid of us than we are of them. They are remarkable creatures that should be admired and not bothered." "That's good to know. These guys are kinda cute actually. Oh my, what is that thing?"
