Gordon Cooper was born on March 6, 1921 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
His full name was Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr.

He attended schools in Shawnee, Oklahoma and Murray, Kentucky.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.


He was a Colonel in the Air Force, flying F-84s and F-86s for four years in Munich, Germany.
He was also an aeronautical engineer and a test pilot, logging 7000 flight hours.
In Project Mercury, he served as capsule communicator (CAPCOM) for Alan Shepard and Scott Carpenter and backup pilot for Wally Schira.
He also flew on his own mission for Project Mercury.

His mission was called Atlas 9. The goal was to perform a manned 1-day spaceflight.


Cooper, as well as many other potential astronauts, went through various tests and evaluations to ensure that he was fit for space.
