"A book has got smell. A new book smells great. An old book smells even better. An old book smells like ancient Egypt." - Ray Bradbury
My first plane ride ever was sure one to remember. I was be joining my Dad, a world-famous archeologist, and his team as they travelled to Egypt. They were going to investigate a new find at the ancient pyramids.
The plane ride was long but I ended up snoozing for most of the trip. We arrived at the airport and a taxi took us to our hotel. My Dad told his crew to get a good night's sleep before they headed off to visit the pyramids the next morning.
I got to ride in a really cool jeep with my Dad and one of his team members. Oh how exciting this was going to be. "I'm all ready Dad!" "So sorry hun. It's too dangerous for you to go inside the pyramids. I brought you a pail and shovel to play with though." "Oh, okay" I replied.
I sat around and played in the sand for a while but I started getting bored. My Dad and his team were sure spending a lot of time inside the pyramid. I wanted to go inside and explore so bad but I wasn't allowed. Out of nowhere a little girl appeared and started talking to me, "Hi there. Welcome to the ancient pyramids."
She looked like a princess all dressed up in a fancy white dress with gold trim. "Who are you?" "My name is Princess Djehuti but you can just call me DJ." "I'm Susannah Spector from America." "Nice to meet you. Are you ready to learn a bit about ancient Egypt?" "Really? But what about the others?" "Don't worry, one of the High Priests put a temporary spell on them."
"So who really built the pyramids?" There are many different theories including aliens but that would be silly now wouldn't it? The pyramids were already here when I was born." "When was that, eight years ago or so?" "More like 2550 B.C." "Oh I see."
THE OASIS LOUNGE
"I'm getting a little thirsty, is there anywhere I can get a drink?" "Why yes, I know a place. Hi there Omar. How's business?" "Pretty slow today. Had the odd Pharaoh stop by but that's about it." "We'll take two lemonades please. Imhotep, would you like anything to drink?" "No I'm good thanks" the camel replied.
"I hope you weren't too freaked out about how old I really am" DJ said. "Not really. I'm actually more amazed that your camel can talk." "He's actually fluent in Arabic as well. I'm just happy to finally have somebody I can talk to. We mostly get tourists and and adventure seekers around here."
"Speaking of your Dad, I wonder what's taking him so long?" "I don't know but he really knows his history. He can even read that fancy writing on the walls." "You mean hieroglyphics." "Yeah that." "We'll go look for him soon. I want to tell you a bit more about ancient Egypt though." "I'm all ears" Susannah replied.
"What's that symbol on your dress by the way? It looks cool." "It's called an Ankh. It represents the concept of eternal life." "So that's why you're still around after all of these years?" "Bingo! What brought your Dad and his team to the ancient pyramids?" "Apparently he heard that there may be an undiscovered tomb in one of the pyramids."
