I'd like to dedicate this book to Ms. Wheatley because she gave the class an assignment to make a children's book.

There once was a girl named Nefertari. She had dark skin and pretty brown, coily hair. Her skin was the color of dark chocolate and her hair was too. The dark colors were perfect for her, and so was her name.

Nefertari did not like her name, or the color of her skin, or her hair. She thought her name was too long, she did not like all of the letters. She thought her skin was too dark. To Nefertari her hair was too thick and not straight enough.

At school, Nefertari would get picked on because of her name. The other kids could not say her name right and never tried to. Nefertari did not like it when the other kids would make fun of her. She would not want to be around the other kids because of it.
At school, Nefertari's teacher would call her Tari for short. The teacher would say she did not want to get her name wrong, so she would call her Tari instead. All of the kids called Nefertari by her new nickname. Nefertari liked the name Tari more than she did her real name.

We'll call you Tari now!

In town, Nefertari would see a lot of ads showing off people with lighter skin than her. She never really saw people with the same colored skin as her. Nefertari thought her skin was too dark, she wished she could be lighter. She began to dislike going into town because she did not like seeing all of the people that she thought were prettier than her.

Nefertari would never see people with hair like her's on the ads that she saw around town. Nefertari thought that her hair was not good enough to make it on an ad. All of the people had long, blond hair that was the complete opposite from her own hair. Seeing all of this long and straight hair made Nefertari want to change her coily hair to match what she thought was the meaning of beauty.

One day, Nefertari's mom noticed that her daughter seemed upset. This bothered Nefertari's mom because she was so used to seeing her daughter happy. She called her daughter over by her name, but Nefertari didn't come. Her mother called Nefertari again, but still she did not respond.
Nefertari finally turned to her mom after she had touched her shoulder.
"Why did you not answer the first time?" Her mom asked.
"I don't like my name, so I don't answer to it".
"What do you mean? What do you answer to?"
"Tari" Nafertari smiled brightly. "My name is Tari now".
