Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter
and his wife. They had two kids; a boy named
Hansel and a girl named Gretel. Seven years after
the children were born, their mother had grew ill
and died. The children's father married a new
woman who was greatly evil. To make it all
worse, a famine came over the land and food and
money became scarce.

One night, the woodcutter asked his wife, "What will become
of us. We have no money to feed our faces and we shall all
wither away."
The cruel stepmother didn't like Hansel and Gretel and said,
"Listen well! We will take the children deep into the forest
and leave them there! Then, we shall have enough food for
both of us!" The woodcutter had no choice but to agree.
Hansel and Gretel heard their conversation. Gretel began to
cry over the thought she would never see her father again.
"It's okay Gretel." Hansel said. "We will not be lost in that
forest. I swear on mothers grave!"

Once everyone was asleep, Hansel sneaked out of
the cottage and collected some shining pebbles on
the ground. "Tomorrow when we walk into the
woods, I will drop these pebbles on the ground.
When stepmother leaves us, we shall wait till
night and they will light up. We will follow the
lighted path to our home!" Hansel planned.
And so, he gathered the many pebbles and
returned to his bed in the cottage.

The next day, the stepmother and the woodcutter
led Hansel and Gretel deep into the woods. Along
the way, Hansel dropped the pebbles as he
walked.

The family got to a spot in the woods. The father
made a small fire to keep the children warm and
the parents set off "to look for more fire wood".
Instead, they returned home. Hansel and Gretel
slept until night. As they awoken, the lighted
stones made a path. They followed it back to their
cottage.

Once Hansel and Gretel returned home, their
stepmother was furious while the woodcutter was
as happy as a lark. Later that night the stepmother
said, "Tomorrow we shall take them back to the
woods, but we will take them deeper into the
forest. Understand?" The father had no choice but
to agree.
Gretel began to cry again and Hansel comforted
her. "Don't worry Gretel. I will return outside to
get more pebbles."
The stepmother over heard this and locked the
door and hid the key. Hansel couldn't go outside
and had no plan. So he returned to his bed and
sobbed.

The next morning, the woodcutter gave each child
a biscuit to eat for later. Hansel got the idea of
using breadcrumbs as a path. So Hansel would
drop a crumb as they walked, but the birds would
sweep down and gobble them up!
So now they didn't have a path.
The stepfather set them up a fire
again and they slept till night. That night they could
find no crumbs! Hansel was also hungry for he now
had no biscuit to eat. Gretel generously gave her
brother half of her biscuit and
the two ate the halves. Then the
two fell asleep next to the fire and
dreamed an angel watched over them as they slept.

The next day, they awoken and smelt something
delicious. They followed the smell to a
gingerbread house in the middle of the woods!
Hansel had a piece of it's roof while Gretel had a
piece of a window pane. Suddenly they heard a
noise that said,
"Nibble Nibble Little Mouse, Who's That Nibbling
on My Little House?"
An old woman came out of the house and greeted
the children. She offered to feed them and they
could spend the night in her home and the next
morning she would take them out of the forest.
They agreed and had tasty treats inside and later
fell asleep inside her cozy house.
