We live on the Earth. The Earth is a planet. It moves round the Sun. Ancient Romans knew five more planets. You can see these planets without a telescope. The Romans named the planets after their gods.

The first planet is the nearest to the Sun. It is small and moves very fast. The Romans named it after the god Mercury - the messenger of gods.

The second planet is the brightest. It looks like a star. The Romans called it Venus - the goddess of love and beauty.

The third planet from the Sun is our Earth. It has a natural satellite called the Moon. The Moon moves round the Earth.

The fourth planet is red. Its colour looks like fire or blood. Its name is Mars - the Roman god of war.

The fifth planet is the largest of all. The Romans named it after Jupiter - king of the gods.
