Follow me to learn about the Navajo people!
Native Americans have always been apart of American history but they played an important role when the world was at war.
The Navajo Code Talkers used their language to help the United States military. They developed a code that was impossible to understand to the enemies.

In 1939 World War II began and it was the Allies against the The Axis Powers. The Allies and The Axis Powers were fighting in the countries of Europe and Asia. Homes were destroyed from the war and even children lost their homes.

European Children had to be evacuated to safety. There homes were not safe!

The United States were attacked by the Japanese, so in 1942 the United States joinedthe war. The United States joined on the side of the Allies against Japan who belonged to The Axis Powers.

Here are the Allies! Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin

The United States sent troops to Japan where they communicated in codes but the Japanese military was prepared and could translate the codes being sent.

Soldiers hard at work
The United States was trying hard to come up with codes that the Japanese could not decode but it took too much time for the American troops.

Could you translate this for me?
Phillip Johnston was in the army and had an idea. He grew up on a Native American reservation where he learned the language.

At 9 years old he even translated the Native American language in Washington, D.C., for Indian rights
The reservation was the Navajo reservation and the Navajo language had no alphabet.
Because it had no alphabet and was only known to those who grew up speaking it, Johnston knew it would undecipherable to the enemies.

This is where it all began!
In 1942 Navajo men and even boys as young as 15 were recruited and enlisted. Some were even drafted into war.

The military needed a lot of help!

After the Navajo men were enlisted they had to go through training. They were going to create a new code using the Navajo language.

There they are the first Navajo Code Talkers!
