First Punic War...
A long long time ago both the Romans and the Carthaginians wanted control of the islands "Sicily" and "Corsica". This is what started the Punic Wars. The first Punic Wars was also known as the Carthaginian War.
-Hannibal's father was a great general in the first Punic War. Because of this, Hannibal expected great success in the second Punic War.
-An interesting thing he did was use elephants to travel. He led the soldiers to the next battle point by riding elephants.
-Hannibal wanted control of Italian territory and got within 3 miles of the capital before neither side could get any further. He consistently defeated the Roman army, but he never took the city of Rome itself.
-Some of his tactics were used in WW II and he led his army to victories over the next 15 years.
-Hannibal became the leader of Carthage forces in 221 bc.
Second Punic War
-Rome sent forces to Spain and Carthage and hoped for a quick victory. Hannibal stopped them and their strategy.
-The army marched through the Alps and into northern Italy.
-In the battle of Cannae Hannibal lost 6,000 soldiers while Rome lost 60,000.
-After the battle of Zama Rome had become masters of the western world.
After the second Punic War
-Rome focused on the eastern Mediterranean and eventually became master of the eastern Mediterranean.
-In the third Punic War Carthage broke one part of the treaty with Rome. Instead of being moved 10 miles inland, they fought.
-After 3 years Rome captured Carthage.
The first Punic War lasted from 264 bc and 241 bc
The second Punic War lasted from 218 bc and 201 bc
THe third punic war lasted from 149 bc and 146 bc
This topic tells us a lot about Rome as it grew into a republic. For example, the Romans and Carthaginians will do whatever it takes to get their way. Even if it means risking mens lives. Also it shows that in Rome, there was a lot of violence especially in the Punic Wars.
