I'd just like to thank mr. Peterson for not kicking me out of class

A long time ago, in what now is known as China, the many warring states fought for 200 years. Each believed that they were supreme and should rule over all of China. However, it was not until 221 BCE that the state Qin, a state from the West rose above others. Their leader, Shi Huangdi, would be the first to rule and unite China in known history.

In his new empire, Shi Huangdi enforced Legalism, a philosophy that kept everyone in line with a strict government and severe punishments for anyone who did not obey. Confucianism, with it's opposing ideas, was hunted down. Books that did not follow the new order were burned, and scholars, particularly Confucian scholars, were persecuted.

To create a more united empire, Shi Huangdi worked to have a uniform kingdom. He established standard written script, measurements, money, and sizes of roads.

To keep control of the whole empire, Huangdi took land from previous nobles and divided it up into 36 new states. He assigned new governors to keep charge of those areas of land. However, this left turmoil within the Nobility.

To keep his people safe from invaders, Shi Huangdi ordered the construction of a wall that connected pre-existing walls along the northern chinese border.
