Teaching in a Diverse Society storybook

Hola, Me llamo Jose. I’m 7 years old and I live with mi Mamá, Papá, and younger brother Miguel. While living in Colombia, I lived in a beautiful home on a farm. I had my own room, a bicycle, and a dog named Rocco. I also had many friends that I would play with every day.

One day I heard my parents talking about moving to the United States. I was so confused and asked them: “¿Qué está pasando? ¿Por qué tenemos que movernos?” My parents explained to Miguel and I that we had to move so my brother and I could go to a better school.

we want you and Miguel to go to a better school.
¿Qué está pasando? ¿Por qué tenemos que movernos?
The news made me very sad since I had to leave my friends and dog behind. I laid on my bed that night thinking “mis amigos, mi perro.” what would happen to them.

Mis amigos, Mi perro.
A few months passed and my family was ready for the move. I said goodbye to my friends including my best friend Rocko. Everybody was sad as we were saying goodbye.

Adiós Jose!
Once we arrived in the United States, I felt nervous because I didn't know how to speak English. I wondered how I would make new friends as I helped my parents unpack.

The next morning mi mamá woke Miguel and I very early as she made breakfast.

As we walked to school I felt nervous and scared. what if the other kids wouldn't like me or Miguel. What if they made fun of me??

Don't worry you'll make friends.
