Abraham Lincoln is a very important man in United States history. He was the 16th president and is most famous for helping the United States survive the Civil War.

American Civil War leader.
During the Civil War, the country was torn in two, with the North and South battling it out. Everyone thought the country was doomed, but Abraham Lincoln brought peace and compromise to unite the country.

Born in a single-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809.

Ran for President.
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln ran for President and won. He was inaugurated in May 1861.

Against slavery.
Abraham Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery along with the northern states, but the south wanted to keep it. Lincoln thought slavery had to come to an end if the country was going to stay together.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free."

Honest.
Abraham Lincoln has the nickname "Honest Abe" because he is remembered for always being transparent with the country. He looked at the "big picture" and made decisions based on what he thought was best for the whole country.

Attempted unity.
Abraham Lincoln tried his best to maintain unity in the country, but the south began to secede anyways. Despite his attempts, the country Abraham Lincoln just became President of had now split in two. And thus, the Civil War began on April 12, 1861.

Marriage and family.

Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd (Lincoln) on November 2nd, 1842. They had four sons, however two of them died as children.

Lead the Union.
As President, Abraham Lincoln was commander in chief of the armies. He lead the Union (northern states) into battle against the Confederacy (southern states) during the Civil War.

Issued Emanicpation Proclamation
On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This ordered the states that were controlled by the Union to free all of their slaves. However, it wasn't until the end of the war that all slaves would be set free.
