One summer’s day, in a field, a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content.
An Ant passed by, bearing along with great effort an ear of corn he was taking to his nest.
"Why don’t you come and chat with me," asked the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling your life away?"
"I am helping to store up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and I recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper. "We have got plenty of food at present."
But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no
food and found itself dying of hunger .
The grasshopper saw how the hardworking ant had plenty of food to eat and realised its foolishness.
Suddenly he remembered the ant.
‘Ah – I will go to the ant and ask her for food and shelter!’ declared the grasshopper,
So off he went to the ant’s house and knocked at her door.
‘Hello ant!’ he cried cheerfully. ‘Here I am, to sing for you, as I warm myself by your fire, while you get me some food from that larder of yours!’
