Once in a kitchen, there was an orange. He had been raised in an orange grove where he was told that oranges were the best fruit, and nothing else could be better than him. So when he went to the store and saw all the other fruits, he thought he was the best.

But, when he was brought home to his new fruit bowl, he was put at the bottom. He was so angry at the bottom that a part of him started to go bad.

“I’m the best, I should be at the top!” he said, and with each holler that bad bit of him grew. He was surprised when the family that bought him kept picking the other fruits. Eventually he was the last fruit in the bowl, but that was okay, it meant they were saving the best for last.  

Because surely no other fruit could be as good as him. Oranges were the best after all, and he was the best of the oranges. Yet, as he told himself this, his nasty spot grew and the family kept avoiding him.

One day, a new batch of fruit arrived in the fruit bowl, including another orange.

“I should be on top because I’m the oldest and I’m the best,” said the now green spotted orange. “Oranges are better than any other fruit, and I’m the best orange!”    

The other fruits only stared back as they watched his green spots grow.
