First Day
The first day of the Battle of Gettysburg was in early June 1863. General Lee was gathered west of Gettysburg and unaware of the Union's camps closer to Gettysburg. The battle was triggered when Lee's troops ran right into General George Meade's cavalry. The battle officially started on July 1, 1863 when the exchanging of fire began. At the end of this first day both sides had to ask for reinforcements and prepare for combat the next day.
Second Day
The second day of the battle, July 2, Lee ordered an attack on the left side of the Union line. From the hill Lee's troops could easily fire down on the Union, they viciously fought for control of the Little Round Top. The south side was the most gruesome and it is said that "the blood stood in puddles in some places in the rocks." Eventually, the Union forced the Confederates to leave Little Round Top. The Confederates than attacked Cemtery Hill and Culp's Hill way into the night. Although Cemetery Hill was unsuccessful, the Confederates took a few trenches on Culp's Hill.
Third Day
July 3, Longstreet tried to convince Lee not to attack but was unsuccessful, and Lee planned to attack the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. Because this was not expected General Meade left only 5,750 troops to defend the center. Confederates shelled Cemetery Ridge with cannon fire for over an hour but it did little damage. George Pickett commanded the largest unit of Pickett's Charge with 15,000 men. Soon the Confederates retreated leaving about 7,500 casualties on the battle field. On the fourth day Lee began to retreat to Virginia. General Meade decided not to go after Lee and that was the end of the Battle of Gettysburg a crucial turning point in the war.
