Day 1: The first day, General Lee cut across northern Maryland into southern Pennsylvania. Lee didn't know that the Union soldiers were settled closer to the town. Lee wasn't receiving the information that he needed to know because the chief wasn't doing his duties. The bigger groups of Confederate forces started pushing the Union troops back to Gettysburg. Confederate James Longstreet decided that it was almost impossible to defeat the Union, so he moved the Confederate army east. He would wait for the Union army to come to them and attack first.
Day 2: On July 2, Lee ordered an attack on the left side of the Union line. The hill made it possible to fire down the line of the Union's forces. The Union forces and Confederate army were fighting for the control of Little Round Top. This second day of battle was very fierce and violent. Colonel William Oates later said, "The blood stood in puddles in some places in the rocks." Later that day, the Union forced the Confederates to pull back from Little Round Top. After this happened, the Confederates went after Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill. This attack lasted all night. The attack was unsuccessful. The Union forces still held their own.
Day 3: Longstreet tried to convince Lee not to attack. Lee was thinking that the Union forces were ready for a break, so he planned to attack the center of the Union. General Meade only had 5,750 troops defending the center of the Union for the attack. The cannon firing went on between the two for quite some time. Th Confederates thought that they really damaged the Union, but actually the Confederates had very little damage done. Later that day, almost 15,000 men took part in Pickett's Charge. The Confederates lost several people but some of them almost came to their destination. After this, General Lee later said, "It is all my fault."
