Today was an exciting day because it was my first day of school. I made friends with Sammy, Jenna, Jake, Alvin, and Billy. We all had a blast playing tag at recess!

When school ended, everyone's parents picked them up. All of the families looked strange and different.

When my dad, my mom, and I went home, I asked them,"Why are some families strange looking?" My dad said,"What do you mean Guppy?"

"Why does Sammy only have a mom?"

"And why is Billy's family so big?"

I asked him,

"Why doesn't Jake look like his brother Alvin?"

"Why doesn't Jenna's mom look like Jenna?

"Well Guppy, families come in all different sizes and from all different places," said dad.

"Sammy comes from a single-parent family. In a single parent family, the parent either never married, lost their partner, or decided to keep away from their partner."

"Jenna comes from a Blended family. In a blended family,the mom or dad decides to marry someone not related to the kids. The new parent is known as the step parent."

" Jake and Alvin come from an adoptive family. In an adoptive family, the parents decide to take in a child from another family as one of their own."

"Billy comes from an extended family. Extended families have a Mom, Dad, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, and cousins."

I asked my mom, "Mom, what are we?"

Mom said, " We are a nuclear family. We have dad, you, and I."

"But even though we are all different, we are all the same."
