Esperanza Rising

Exposition

Esperanza lives in Mexico with her father, mother and grandmother. She lives in El Rancho de Las Rosas, a large vineyard, in the 1930's. Esperanza has lived a privileged life full of wealth and luxuries.

Conflict

When Papa is killed by bandits, his brothers try to take over the land . When Mama refuses to marry one of the uncles, he burns the house and vineyard. After this, Mama and Esperanza flee to the United States with three of their servants. Miguel Hortensia and Alfonso come along; sadly Abuelita has to stay behind.

Rising Action

Esperanza has difficulty adjusting to her new life style. She has to work in poor conditions in the workers camp. She works in the fields and each week saves a little money to bring Abuelita from Mexico.

Climax

Esperanza reaches her breaking point and tells Miguel she has no hope for the future.

Eventually Mama comes home from the hospital. A little later Miguel returns with a surprise from Mexico. He brought Abuelita.

Resolution

Esperanza celebrates her first birthday after Papa's death. She has suffered through many difficulties but has grown stronger as a result. Her family is back together and happier than ever.
