One day, Dylan and his mom were visiting the local mall. Dylan was very bored and ready to go home when he saw them. He saw the Fly Hopper Jumper Mix 3000s!
The Fly Hopper Jumper Mix 3000s were the most popular shoes on the market right now! Everyone had a pair except for Dylan.
"Mom, I have to get the Fly Hopper Jumper Mix 3000s! Everyone has them!" said Dylan.
"No Dylan, those shoes are too much money. You should raise the money yourself to buy them," said his mother.
Dylan went home that day, mad at the world. He tried thinking of ways to make money fast, but came up with nothing.
"Mom, I can't come up with any ideas on how to make money," said Dylan.
"Well Dylan, let's brainstorm." Dylan's mom thought for a moment. "How about you have a yard sale? You can sell your old toys to the kids in the neighborhood," said Dylan's mom.
Dylan thought of all the old toys he never played with anymore.
"That's a great idea! But how do I have a yard sale?"
Dylan's mom answered him, "Easy. You have to know all about marketing."
"What's marketing?" asked Dylan.
"Marketing is how you plan, price, promote, sell, and share your toys to make your customers happy."
Dylan sat there with a confused expression on his face.
"I don't understand," spoke Dylan.
"Let me explain more. If you want to have a successful business you have to know what marketing mix is," spoke Dylan's mom as she paused briefly. "Marketing mix is really quite easy. Its the product, price, place, and promotion of your business. You also have to know who you're marketing to. This is called target marketing. To find out who your target market is, you have to understand market segmentation. Market segmentation is when you categorize your customers to find the perfect target market. Who are your customers Dylan?"
"The kids in the neighborhood, I think," said Dylan unsure of himself.
Dylan instantly began to understand. He then set on an adventure to have the best yard sale ever. He quickly went upstairs and put all his old toys in a box. Without thinking, Dylan had managed to collect ten toys!
Dylan then went back down the stairs of his house and headed straight for the garage. In the garage he found a table to set all his toys on. He opened the garage door and the room flooded instantly with light. Dylan looked out into the street and saw his countless neighbors enjoying the beautiful day. Dylan stood behind the table with his toys on display and patiently waited for his first customer. He waited there for what seemed like hours, but no one ever came. He then stormed back into the house, mad that no one liked his yard sale.
"Mom," yelled Dylan, "No one likes my yard sale. I was outside for forever and not a single kid bought my toys! Why isn't it working?" Dylan's face became flustered when his mom didn't answer him for few moments.
"Oh Dylan, you silly goose! You didn't let me finish talking. You rushed outside too fast before I could tell you about the seven functions of marketing. The seven functions of marketing are distribution, financing, marketing, pricing, promotion, product, and selling." Dylan's mom paused momentarily. "Now the first step is distribution, which means place. Where is the yard taking place?"
Dylan quickly answered, "The garage!"
