Jimy’s childhood name was “sad kiddo,” as his friends called him. His father left after his mother’s death and couldn’t deal with the pain. He lost his mother at a young age and was never the same after her death. He was put into foster care until he could afford a house. He was a very happy eleven-year-old before this tragedy, now, he was sad. To this day, he will never forget the blood on the floor, the knife in her back, or the men taking her away. He had never felt any more frightened in his life, he is paranoid that the strange men may come back one day. The next day after his mother’s mysterious murder, Jimy sat on the porch with the dog, Gerald, and watched the bleak golden sunrise, sad and now lonely. The sunrise helped him think of all the fun he and his mom had, but now he had lost everything. His sense of personality and trust with any human had been destroyed, at least he thought...
Today, Jimy is a farmer, who lives by himself with his chickens. This farm was a pass down farm from Jimy’s father. Everywhere you stepped, you would step into either mud or a mystery substance. The sour smell of manure stung his nose every day. The only smell that Jimy liked was the flower garden near the chicken coop. There were sheep near the opening, some pigs here and there, the dog was laying down in front of the bright yellow house exhausted. Despite this, every morning he would sit with his animals and watch the sunrise knowing that today is a new day. That one day he would find a friend, a human friend.
The chickens were behind the house. These chickens were Jimy’s only friends, so Jimy loved them very much. He fed them as much as they wanted. This means that he didn’t eat every day. Instead, he feeds his chickens all his food. He raised a bunch of chickens, so he had chicks.
He had to be very circumspect of where he was stepping so he didn’t step on anything precious. But even in this California countryside, he was alone. His baggy clothing and smell of farm wouldn’t get him anywhere else. He loved the countryside and would not want to be in the city. He had heard so much about it and he wanted to at least visit it. But he had been thinking. He had been losing money on his farm and was losing it quickly. A big dilemma that every farmer must have. Well that’s what Jimy thought. He had no one to spend time with, so his animals were his friends. Anyways, what Jimy didn’t know was that there was someone conspiring against him.
One day, Jimy was just feeding the sheep when suddenly, there was a stranger at the gate. Jimy must have thought quick because next thing he knew he was throwing eggs. “What the...?!” said the stranger weirded out.
“WHO ARE YOU?!” Said Jimy.
This stranger had slick black hair pulled back to look business like. He was wearing a suit and tie and looked very mean. He was just standing in front of his truck.
“I’m here to ask you about selling your land.”
Jimy looked confused. “Um, I didn’t say that I wanted to sell the land.”
This is not what the stranger wanted to hear. So, he started to do it himself. He started picking up chickens and putting it in his box.
Not too far away, Juanne was listening. Juanne also had a pretty bad childhood. Her father walked out when she was 12 and had a single mom. She loved her mom, but her mom was always drinking. She moved out when he was 20 and started her own life. But she had an unusual home and life. She lived in a cave near foothills. But now she is here and wants to find a friend. She was just in luck.
“So, you can go now.” Said Juanne.
“Ugh, whatever.” the stranger had given up. As he left, Jimy felt relieved that this random girl just came out of nowhere saved him from that weird man. But now it’s time to see what random girl is...
“Thanks for that, but who are you?” Asked Jimy.
“Why I’m your neighbor, I saw you were having trouble, so I came out to help. Unless there’s anything else I can do, I’m going to go home.” Answered Juanne.
“So where exactly is your home?” asked Jimy.
“I live in that cave, over there, around the hill,” replied Juanne.
“I’ve lived here for like 10 years, how come I’ve never seen you?” Jimy asked.
“I dunno.”
“Can we be friends, because I don’t have any.” Jim asked.“Please?”
“Fine.” Juanne gave in.
“So, what do friends do?”
“Really? You have never had a friend?” Juanne asked dumbfounded.
“No,” said Jimy.
“Well, they hang out and support each other.” said Juanne.
“Well, I want a friend.”
Back in Karl’s office, he is having a conversation with his boss, Bob.
“So, did you get the land?” Asked Bob.
“No, but...” Bob’s patience wasn’t getting any longer. “Well” “I’ll get it sir,” said Karl quickly.
“Don’t make me wait,”
“You won’t,” assured Karl.
“Good.” replied Bob.
“I’ll figure something out...” Karl mumbled under his breath.
Back at the farm, Jimy and Juanne are talking. “Isn’t this fun?” Juanne asked.
“Yeah but it’s getting late.”
“It’s only five.” Said Juanne. It didn’t seem that late to her.
“Yeah, but I have to feed my chickens.”
“Oh,” she said disapointedly
“I would invite you to stay for dinner, but my chickens usually eat all my food."
“Awe, poor Jimy, I must save him,” Juanne says to herself. "YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR SINS!” Juanne yells, directing it at the man. Juanne emerges from her cave with ultimate sass.
Meanwhile, back at the farm... “So, what do ya say... sell the land?” asked the stranger. Then Juanne emerges from around the corner.
“Stop harassing him.”Juanne says.
“I’m not, man, I'm just getting him to sell his land.” The man said.
“I’ve already said no.” Said Jimy
“But I--” Stammered the stranger.
“Ok...?” Juanne started to question her friendship with Jimy.
“Here we can hang out tomorrow.” Jimy said while walking to the door.
“Ok, if that business dude comes over, I'll be here.” Juanne assured Jimy.
“Thanks, but I'm not that into revenge, I'm just glad my chickens are safe.” Jimy told Juanne. “Are you sure? I mean it’s not right for him to torment you like that” Juanne said.
“I'll think about that.”
“Ok...tell me when you decide. Bye.”
“Bye” responded Jimy
Juanne left as Jimy gathered all his food to feed his chickens. As Juanne went back to her cave, she seemed happy almost joyful. She finally has someone to be friends with and be there for. Jimy almost felt the same way. But he was too scared that he may lose his chickens to that scary business dude, so he realized he had to fight to save his land from whatever that guy's name was.
The next morning, Karl realized he is ready, ready to take the land. Karl gets in his car and can’t wait to get this land. The sun was just coming up as a big golden ball rising off the horizon. But besides admiring the sunrise, he was thinking. As he approaches the farm, he feels sorry for the farmer. But whoever that strange dark lady was she had to pay. When he approached the entrance, Jimy came out, ready with eggs in his hands and asked, “What do you want now?”
“I’m back here to say sorry. I didn’t really introduce myself that well.
I’m Karl I’m here to sell at least some of your land.” Karl said.
Karl was a fine young man, who worked in the city as a business man. Jimy responded with, “Okay, well I’m Jimy and this is Juanne.” He points to the bush and Juanne comes out from behind the bush and tries to hug Karl.
“Hug?” “AAAAAAAHHH” Karl screamed because he does not like hugs one bit. “AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH” Juanne yelled because she does not like screaming one bit. She ran behind to the bush.
“Sorry for that,” Jimy says, signaling to the bush.
“No problem. Can you come to my office set up a few dates and times or, some costs for the land?” asked Karl.
“I already said no. Stop asking me.”
“Well, I tried. I'll see you tomorrow with more info.”
Karl gets back into the car and begins to leave. “Wait!” Yelled Jimy.
“What?”
“Let me go to your office.” said Jimy. He started to change his mind...
“Okay, hop in.” replied Karl.
“Can Juanne come?” Jimy asked.
Juanne came out from behind the bush confused.
“Oh, yes that would be great.” Juanne agreed.
“Sure. Why not?” Said Karl. In the car, they are having a conversation.
“So why exactly did you come and ‘save Jimy from me’?” Karl asked.
Juanne responded with, “Well you were harassing him.”
“I wouldn’t say I was harassing him,”
“But you were making him do something he didn’t want to do.” said Juanne.
“Well, I’m right here aren’t I?” Jimy said to both.
“True.”
“Whatever.” Said Juanne. “You have no idea what you are doing”
“Well you can help him, Juanne”
“I’m practically your mentor”
“Well, that’s cool, but we are here at my office building.”
“Ok can Jimy and I have a little word?” Juanne asked Karl.
“Ok but make it quick.” Karl responded. Karl leaves the
car and leaves Jimy and Juanne alone.
“I will help you through everything. I lived with my parents in the city as a kid and we went through this so many times.” said Juanne.
“Well I’m glad that I have a friend like you.”
“Ok, this is getting too sucky.”
“Ok let’s get this done and over with.” Said Jimy. As they were walking into the building, Karl’s boss spotted him.
“Karl, what are you doing, I thought you were out trying to get the land."
“Well, I was, and I decided to bring the argument back to the office.”
“Ok, why not? Come to my office and we’ll talk” said Karl’s boss. Now in the boss’s office, they started talking again about selling the land.
"Who is this, Karl?” asked Jimy.
“Oh, I am so sorry, I didn’t properly introduce you guys,” Looking at his boss, Karl says, “Bob, this is Jimy, the land owner I was talking to you about,” and then looking at Jimy, Karl says, “and Jimy, this is Mr. Bob, my boss.”
“Nice to meet you.” says Mr. Bob sticking his hand out to shake hands with Jimy.
“Uhm, hello.” Jimy replies ignoring the hand and introduces Juanne, “This is my friend/neighbor Juanne, she is here for mental support.”
“Nice to meet you...” Mr. Bob replies feeling uncomfortable.
“Well let’s start of with why we should sell the land. Karl?” Mr. Bob said while looking at Karl. Karl didn’t like to mess up in front of his boss, so he was nervous.
“Well, you have nice soil because you use fertilizer to grow your
crops.” said Karl nervously.
“Ok and now why you shouldn’t sell your land?” asked Bob looking at Jimy.
“Well every place of my land is being used.” replied Jimy confidently.
“Ok well, that settles it. We are not selling the land.” Juanne argued.
“Last time I looked, this man right here was the owner of the land. Not you. Now sit down and let him deal with this.” Mr. Bob said sternly. Juanne sat back down and went silent.
“Let me make a deal with you. If you sell your land where the chickens
are, because it’s so small, we will buy it for a good price.” Karl said.
“NOT MY CHICKENS!” Jimy yelled so loud that Juanne screamed and ran out of the room, Karl’s boss stood up and got frustrated, and Karl slouched because he thought he was going to get fired because he brought this mess into the office. After Jimy finished, everyone sat back down and stared at each other for 5 minutes.
“Well, I have decided. I will not sell the land and there is nothing you can do to make me sell it.” Jimy said done with this argument.
Jimy looked happy. He looked up as Juanne just stared at him.
“What, do I have something on my face?” Jimy said wiping his face repeatedly
"What happened to your voice."
"I don't know, I guess I got sick."
"Oh nevermind, you just seem happy." She said smiling.
“I’m happy because of you...” Jimy said smiling back. “You’ve been such a help in all this mess and I’m just thankful to have you with me. I just don’t understand why you’re still helping me”
“What are you talking about?”Juanne thought about the first time the met.
“You appeared out of thin air to help me, I’m still not sure why but you, stayed with me, became my first friend. Sometimes I wonder what I would do without you. I would be lost.”
“No, don’t think about that. I’m here for you, and that’s all that matters.”
All they did was stare. Stare at each other for what seemed like an eternity. And then they smiled and laughed at absolutely nothing. But that didn’t matter. All that mattered was that they were together. Then Jimy did it, he faced his fears. He kissed Juanne.
Juanne was shocked but was also expecting this to happen at the same time. Everything was perfect, all they had to do was keep the land. They finished up lunch and headed back to the office.
When they came up, they held hands and Karl looked at them weird.
“Are you guys...” Karl was confused.
“Sure.” They both said, and they looked at each other smiling.
“Ok, but can you just reconsider selling your land?” Karl asked.
“You know what? Let’s sell some of my land.” Jimy said.
Juanne took her hand out of Jimy’s grip. “What do you think you’re doing?"
Jimy looked at her. “You heard me, I want to sell some of my land.” He repeated.
“Why the heck would you do that?”
“I need some money, and this is the only way I can do it.” Jimy told her. He was looking at the boss, and then he mentioned him to come in. As Jimy started walking up, Juanne walked in front of him and whispered so that only Jimy knew what she said, “Do you know what you’re doing?”
Jimy returned her question with a nod and started to walk on without her. He left her there knowing that he was going to mess up somehow and destroy all his workings. Juanne knew that he loved his farm more than he could love anything, but she was just gonna let him do whatever he thought was right. Juanne thought to herself about Jimy, that he should always know, that she would save him from anything he manage to get himself into. With that, she started to turn her back and walk to a bus stop feeling lonely again.
Back at the farm, Jimy arrived with Karl and when he stepped out, Juanne ran up and said, “What did you do?!”
Jimy looked back at her and said, “Don’t worry. It's not bad.”
Just as he said that three men jumped out of the truck and continued to follow Jimy. They followed him behind the house toward the chickens. “This way my dudes.” Jimy pointed to the chicken coop.
“What the hell is going on?” Juanne screamed at Jimy.
“I am just letting them check out the land. Because the chicken coop is the smallest part of the land, I'm selling it.”
Jimy and Juanne walked out with sass. Outside the building, Juanne wanted to show her friend around the city.
“This was my home as a kid and I want to show you around.” Juanne said waving her hand to Karl while walking away.
“Um... Ok” Jimy and Juanne started wandering around the city. Juanne showed him everything that he never knew about. Juanne brought Jimy to a restaurant to eat an actual meal for the first time in many years.
Once they got the food, Juanne looked at Jimy.
“Look. We can figure this out. Don’t sell the land. There is a better way of doing this.”
They heard a voice out back around the house. “This is perfect. We can buy the land for 10,000 dollars.” Jimy looked at Juanne and said. “We will take it,” to Juanne, “we can live without the chickens. I won’t sell the house so you can live with me.”
Juanne backed away shaking her head in fright that he was going to sell everything. She ran away back to her home. She cried and cried.
She thought Jimy was going to get addicted to money and destroy his life.
She hadn’t left the cave for days. She was too scared to see what Jimy was doing. But today was different. She had heard Jimy yelling at someone. He sounded mad. Juanne walked out and started walking towards the farm. When she got there most of the land was blocked off and Jimy was sitting on the porch of his house. He looked content but was just watching.
