This book is dedicated to my beautiful best friend, who struggled as a little girl. Evelin, through your struggles, you became the beautiful strong woman who you are today. Your story is an inspiration to the young souls of our future.
"¡Maribel! ¡Despierta!"
Maribel woke up and just thought,
"Today's my first day of school,
I'm so nervous that the kids will be cruel."
"I'm worried that because I'm different I'll never fit in,"
She thought as she touched her chin.
She thought,"Maybe no one will notice me,
there's just no guarantee."
As nervous Maribel sat on the rug,
she took many deep breaths and started to shrug.
She sat next to a girl, whose hair had a curl, and
whose words seemed to have a twirl.
Maribel could not understand the curly-headed girl,
but soon she learned that her name was Pearl.
Pearl played with Maribel at the playground.
Maribel no longer frowned.
Maribel's teacher was a nice blonde lady,
whose name was Ms. Brady.
When Ms. Brady spoke to her, Maribel felt shy.
She squirmed in her seat and began to cry.
Maribel could not understand Ms. Brady.
She followed Ms. Brady's hands,
to listen to what seemed like so many demands.
Ms. Brady would call on Maribel.
She looked up with eyes full of worry.
Everything just seemed so terribly blurry.
Maribel sounded out each letter and even practiced at home.
Even though her head roamed,
she yelled, “Mami! A is for aaa-pppp-le!”
For days, she’d just babble.

Ms.Brady even labeled the classroom to help Maribel.
She’d walk around and sound out each word well,
“Cc-ch-air.”
The other students would stare.
One day, Maribel walked into school and said, “Hi! I’m Maribel!”
Everyone looked at her and almost fell.
