What is Rabies?
Rabies is a disease caused by the transfer of saliva from an animal (only
including mammals) bite.

Dog bites are the
most common cause of
human rabies.
In BC, you should be aware that
bats may also carry rabies and
you should avoid them to
prevent the transmission of the
disease.

Other animals (vectors) that may carry rabies
include raccoons, foxes, and coyotes.
If a human was bitten by any of these animals that
had the rabies virus, the human would have the
potential to be infected with human rabies.

When an animal has rabies, they may be paralyzed
in the hind limbs or throat muscles. Some mammals
may become aggressive and attack humans at
random times. Bats may seem weak, and may be
seen flying during the daytime with confusion.

Around 3-8 weeks after a
person has been infected with
the rabies virus, symptoms
such as headache, fever,
increasing difficulty in
swallowing, excessive drooling,
muscle spasm or weakness,
strange behavior, etc. may
appear.

Preventing
Rabies
a story

This is Doug. Doug has a dog.
To prevent the trasmission of
potential rabies from his dog,
Doug gives his dog a vaccination.

This prevents Doug's dog from getting rabies so
there won't be a chance for his dog to infect him.

One day, Doug sees a bat.
To prevent himself from getting
rabies, Doug avoids the bat and
does not touch it.
However, Doug realizes
the bat is dead.
