CHAPTER 1
Mrs. Sanchez´ homework took the fun out of everything. When I wanted to be outside watching the leaves slowly fall from the naked trees, I always had to do her work. Instead, I had to watch the start of my favorite season through my dirty, dust covered window. So, that was exactly what I was doing on October 3rd, 2018. I stared outside where the streets were covered in blankets of warm toned leaves and the birds started to fly south in unison. I was enjoying the beauty of nature until I was interrupted by a the ring of a video chat call on my iPad. I wasn´t planning on answering until I saw that it was my best friend, Gabi. When I answered, she immediately started to ask about homework, like always.
¨Did Mrs. Sanchez give us homework?¨ She asked frantically.
¨Of course she did, what kind of question is that?¨ I answered holding up the essay paper.
Gabi´s eyes widened and she ran to grab her backpack. I looked at my paper only to see that it was bare and incomplete. Gabi appeared back on my screen and she had the assignment in her hand.
¨Gabi, I don´t know if I can keep up in Mrs. Sanchez´s class,¨ She said while she wrote.
¨It´s not that hard,¨ I responded while I also started my essay.
¨Easy for you to say, you have a 96 in her class,¨ Gabi replied.
¨It´s because I work hard, but this, this essay will be the end of me,¨ I said with a yawn following.
¨Mrs. Sanchez is always so... suspicious for some reason, surprised our school hired her,¨ Gabi said.
I nodded in agreement. Our writing teacher, Mrs. Sanchez isn't the greatest teacher. She isn't a great person either. Five years ago, she was busted for being crime partners with her husband, Daniel Sanchez. Both of them were major burglars. Plus, they always wore black, nothing else. They were like the Bonnie and Clyde of our time, but less intense. When the students in my grade saw that she was on the staff directory list this year, everyone started to freak out. A kid even transferred to another school. But, our small school was in desperate need of teachers, so, I guess they resorted to hiring criminals that dressed in black. Gabi and I have theories that they´re still doing bad things but, it´s probably not likely. It was five years ago. People can change.
I looked down at my watch. It was 2:44 and my rehearsals started at 3:00. ¨Gabi I gotta go, rehearsals,¨ I said in a rush. She rolled her eyes and I ended the call.
I grabbed my coat, threw on old and busted up yellow converse, and sprinted out of the front door. My school was just down the street so usually, I was always early. When I stepped foot on our front porch, the feeling of fall filled me. I loved walking to school because this was the time when I could enjoy the outdoors. I walked down the sidewalk admiring the orange trees until I saw that I was nearing the entrance to my school. I walked into the cafetorium and I started to mark my blocking from last rehearsals in my script just like everyone else was doing. Then, the silence was cut off by a loud voice.
¨Good Afternoon everyone! Today we are going to be reviewing all of the blocking and scene changes from last week.¨ Our theatre teacher, Mr. Campbell said with the typical drama teacher voice. Everyone set their scripts on the cafeteria table and walked over to the stage. As I was walking, I heard the janitor's closet door quietly shut. I looked over to see a woman in a blacked out outfit and a blinding pearl bracelet. I squinted. I tried to make out who it was.
It seemed like no one else saw what I saw. It was hard to see her since the whole cafeteria area was dark. I was washed with confusion since no one but us theatre kids were the only ones at school on a Sunday, not even the janitors came to the school. I stood at my place on stage until it hit me. Mrs. Sanchez ALWAYS wears her shiny pearl bracelet and she ALWAYS wears black . I stood even more confused. Why was she here? What was she doing? My suspicions grew. I carried on through rehearsals with the sight revolving around my brain.
CHAPTER 2
¨I´m telling you, she´s up to something,¨ Gabi told me on video chat after I told her what I saw.
¨Maybe she was just setting up a lesson plan for tomorrow,¨ I replied with hope that Mrs. Sanchez wasn't planning something bad.
¨She never plans anything! Even if she was, why would she be in the janitor's closet?¨ She said proving a point. I nodded my head. She wasn't wrong. It was quiet for a little but then I heard Gabi gasp. She looked at me with an idea flashing in her eyes.
¨What?¨ I asked wanting to know what she was thinking.
¨What if we investigated around Mrs. Sanchez´s room tomorrow?¨ She asked with a crazy look in her eyes.
¨Are you out of your mind?¨ I questioned.
¨Hear me out, Mrs. Sanchez always leaves after 6th period since she doesn't have a 7th period and our 7th period is right across her room. We can say we had to go to the restroom and then
we can sneak into her room,¨ Gabi responded.
¨Absolutely not! I can get kicked out of my electives!¨ I said crossing my arms.
¨Please Allie,¨ She said with puppy eyes. I sighed thinking about what could go wrong. Everything could go wrong. But everyone always tell me to have fun and take risks so, I guess I had to do it.
¨Fine,¨ I said. Gabi started jumping on her bed chanting, ¨We´re gonna bust Mrs. Sanchez.¨ We started planning everything from timing to where to look. It was mostly Gabi planning but I contributed with ¨good idea,¨ and ¨that would work¨. We finally came up with a master plan and we went to sleep. I was thinking about the pros and cons of this idea. The more I went deeper in thought, the more I knew one thing. Mrs. Sanchez was up to no good.
CHAPTER 3
The end of 6th period bell rung and at that moment, I felt butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. My heart started to pump of of my chest. I started to focus on how badly this could go but I tried to sweep those thoughts away. My palms started to sweat and my fingers I started to fidget. I walked out of my journalism class and headed to science. The more I walked closer to the classroom, the more I felt nervous. I stepped my foot into Ms. Lawrence´s class and I saw Gabi bouncing around in her chair and tapping her pencil viciously. She saw me and waved her hand signaling for me to come sit next to her. I slowly walked to the empty seat next to her and she was also anxious.
¨You ready?¨ She asked me.
¨I think,¨ I replied. Ms. Lawrence stood up from her desk and handed out a worksheet. It looked easy enough to finish in a few minutes. Step 1 of our plan was to finish whatever work we were given. It took 5 minutes for both of us to finish and our work looked rushed and sloppy. We quickly went to turn it into the inbox and everyone looked at us with amazement of how we
finished so quickly. Step 1 was then complete. Step 2 was to ask Ms. Lawrence if we could go to the restroom. To make it less suspicious, I would go first and then a few minutes after Gabi would follow. So, I raised my crossed fingers up in the air and Ms. Lawrence shook her head yes. I sped walked out the door and I waited. Shortly after, Gabi walked out and she looked excited and nervous. We sneaked over to Mrs. Sanchez´s room and I looked through the window. The light was on but no one was in there. Gabi double checked to see if anyone was in the room. All of a sudden, we felt a tap on our shoulders. It felt as if everything was in slow motion. It felt like time froze. Both of us jumped out of fear and saw that it was Mrs. Sanchez.
¨Need anything girls?¨ She questioned. We both froze. Gabi didn't say anything so I had to think quick.
¨Yeah, uh,¨ I struggled to get words out of my mouth, ¨Gabi and I were going to ask you if you could return our essays back so we can fix them, um, we didn't... finish.¨
¨Well, it looked finished to me,¨ She answered.
¨Yeah but, uh-¨ I didn't know what to say.
