Who is Nancy Farmer?

Nancy Farmer is an author of children's and young
adult literature who has won three newberry honor
medals for her work. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona
in 1941 as the youngest of three siblings, so much
younger than her older brother and sister that they
were sometimes mistaken for her parents. At age nine
she worked at her parents hotel in a rough part of the
neighborhood and as a result encountered many
strange and interesting people, such as a man who lost
his eye to a grizzly and an artist who painted a picture
of an Aztec sacrifice. When she was older she would
join the Peace Corp from 1963 to 1965, working in
Mozambique and Zimbabwe; there she would meet her
husband Harold Farmer, with whom she had a son
named Daniel.

While she did a tiny bit of writing as a child, Nancy Farmer first
became an author when she was forty years old, during her time
in Zimbabwe; she was studying research on how to control the
Tsetse Fly, a horrid disease spreading pest, and after having her
son Daniel she had to quit her job as a scientist. To help pass the
time she took up writing, first writing a short story on a whim and
then collecting books to teach herself how to write a true novel. She
would eventually submit a story to the Writers of the Future contest in
America, winning a gold medal for her efforts and eventually being
rewarded twenty thousand dollars from the National Endowment for the
Arts for her 1993 novel Do You Know Me? It was the first time that a
children’s novel had won such an award, and since then Nancy Farmer has
had a long and distinguished career as an author of children’s and young
adult fiction.
As a matter of fact, one of her books is directly based off her time in
Zimbabwe; a futuristic story called The Ear, the Eye and the Arm, and it’s
one I’m going to read to you now, so listen closely.
