Core 2: Global Climate
Sl Geography

Larry and his family live in Florida near the coast. Due to a recent increase in greenhouse gases he and his family are at risk of flooding as the sea level has risen around 8 inches in the last 100 years.

Hi, Im Larry and this is my house!
OH NOO! Carbon dioxide levels have risen 315 ppm in 1950 to over 400 ppm in 2012 as a result of burning fossil fuels! Mr. Greenhouse gas has gotten so much stronger due to this increase. As he gets stronger, more radiation is trapped, warming the earth. Mr. Ozone, another gas in the atmosphere, protects us from the suns harmful rays. Mr. Greenhouse's evil plan is to mix with Mr. Ozone and instead of deflecting the heat, he wants to trap the heat and destroy the world. China, USA, and Europe, are the leading cause of pollution and have made Mr. Greenhouse stronger than ever. Our only hope is to stop polluting and making greenhouse gases.

I am Mr. Greenhouse Gas and I trap all the radiation in the atmosphere! Without me the temperature would be 0º!! I'm made up of Water vapor, Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous oxide, Ozone, Chlorofluorocarbons, and lastly, Hydrofluorocarbons!

And I'm water vapor! I give Mr. Greenhouse Gas most of his power, making up around 95% of all greenhouse gases.
After going to the beach, Larry felt the consequences of atmospheric pollution. By this time, the ozone layer has faded away and the temperature has risen by 1.4° Fahrenheit since 1880. At this rate, major ice caps will melt and the sea level will engulf Larry's house. Usually, according to the Atmospheric Energy Budget, 30% of the sun's rays are reflected back into the clouds, 20% is absorbed into the atmosphere, and lastly 50% is absorbed by the earth’s surface. However, we have polluted the Earth so much that around 40% is now absorbed into the atmosphere.

It's too hot! We need to stop polluting the atmosphere with harmful gases, letting the long wave radiation through!

Kyoto Protocol's (1997) aim was to cut carbon emissions by 5% in Toronto and encourages the use of energy sources that do not emit greenhouse gases. More specifically the main aim is to lower the amount of carbon and greenhouse gases being released by combustion. Countries were given limits to how much carbon could be produced and countries with extra emission units are allowed to sell them to countries who are going over their limit. The Paris Agreement (2015) was signed by 174 countries and its key objective is to limit global warming to 2ºC compared with pre-industrial levels, and zero net anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions between 2050 and 2100. The 1.5ºC goal requires zero net emissions and the USA and China both agreed to limit greenhouse emissions. This is a big step forward for mankind as we have finally started to realize the consequences of our actions over the last century.

We need a Change! I'm calling for an emergency meeting where we will discuss the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Climate agreement. Both are put in place to Achieve the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, at a level that would prevent anthropogenic interference with the climate system.
