Hello, everyone!

Today we are planning to make two types of gardens in grandpa Poe's backyard. Grandpa Poe wants a square flower garden, and a rectangular vegetable garden.

We have an area of 100 sq. feet of land to work on. The square piece of land has a perimeter of 10'X10'. Let's go inside and make the plans.

Before we can start building, we need to decide the perimeter of each garden.

What is perimeter

Grandpa Poe?

Perimeter is the sum of the sides length and width of a square or rectangle. Since a rectangle has two sets of equal sides, the formula for determining perimeter (P) of a rectangle is: P = 2 ( L ) + 2 ( W ).

L = Length and W = Width.

Is the formula the same for a square?

Well, a square has four equal sides, therefore the formula is P = 4(s).

Great! Now remember our area is 10 feet by 10 feet (10'X10').

We have to find the right size for each garden, so that they both fit within the area. Lets draw it on a sheet of paper.

Now that we have our plans, let's head out to Oakwood Building Supply in town. We need 22' feet of wood for the rectangular garden, and 16' feet of wood for the square garden.
