I live with my mom and dad. I want to tell you about my favorite Christmas tradition and how it came to be.

Tradition: a belief or custom handed down from one generation to another

Last year, I came home from school on the first day of Christmas break. My parents were already decorating the house and singing Christmas carols.

I was not in a very festive mood.., but I didn't know why.

My parents could tell I wasn't as excited for Christmas as I usually am.

They wanted to find a way to make sure I got my Christmas joy back and never lost it again.

They brainstormed a lot of different ideas.

Brainstorm: to try to solve a problem or come up with new ideas by having a discussion that includes all members of a group 

They decided on trying a new thing that they called the 'Basket of Giving.'

The Basket of Giving was a basket that my parents put in front of the Christmas tree, right where the presents would usually be!



In the basket of giving, we placed clothes, toys, and anything else that we wanted to donate to a family in need.

Donate: to give something away in order to help a person or group
