What is a Hippie?
A person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair and weaving beads, associated wit a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs.

Hippies tended to travel light, and could pick up and go wherever the action was at any time. If the "vibe" wasn't right, hippies were
mobile at a moments notice.

1960s Culture
Drugs
The hippies were usually associated with the use of drugs. During the 60's a large amount of new types of drugs appeared. In fact, the hippies undertook the largest, uncontrolled experiment with drug use in the history of mankind.
Peace Symbol
The peace symbol was developed in the UK as a logo for the Campaign
for Nuclear Disarment, and was embraced by US anti-war
protestors during the 1960s.

Nixon wanted to negotiate peace with Vietnam.
Kent State
Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured on May 4, 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fired on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War.
My Lai Massacre
All eventually had their charges dismissed by courts-martial
except Calley, whose platoon allegedly killed 200 innocent people.

The US left on March 29, 1973.
How were soldiers treated?
They were greeted as heroes in the US. Cities and towns across the country held parades to honor the returning veterans and recognize the sacrifices they had made.
How many people died?
There were 58,000 American deaths.
How much money did the US spend?
The US spent $200 billion.

Watergate Scandal
As president, Nixon's achievements included forging diplomatic ties with China and the Soviet Union, and withdrawing US troops from an unpopular war in Vietnam. However, Nixon's involvement in Watergate tarnished his legacy and deepened American cynicism about government.

Richard Nixon was the 37th US President and was best remembered as the only president ever to resign from office. Nixon stepped down in 1974, halfway through his second term, rather than face impeachment over his efforts to cover up illegal activities by members of his administration in the Watergate scandal.

America's 38th president, Gerald Ford, took office on August 9,1974, following the resignation of President Richard Nixon, who left the White House in disgrace over the Watergate scandal. Ford became the first unelected president in the nation's history.

A longtime Republican congressman from Michigan, Ford had been appointed vice president less than a year earlier by President Nixon. He is credited with helping to restore public confidence in government after the disillusionment of the Watergate era.

As the 39th president of the United States, Carter struggled to respond to formidable challenges, including a major energy crisis as well as high inflation and unemployment. In the foreign affairs arena, he reopened US relations with China and made headway efforts to broker peace in the historic Arab-Israeli conflict, but was damaged later in his term by a hostage crisis in Iran.
