My husband sent a letter to me today. Apparently, a brief battle
occured 3 days ago on October 2nd. Luckily, none of the Texans were
killed. It all started because of a cannon! One cannon! I think that it is
crazy to make our soldiers battle for one measly cannon. My husband
feels that he should fight for Texas no matter what. I don't agree, but I
respect him. So, Mexico gave us a cannon to use against indians. Well
Mexico wanted it back and Santa Anna didn't want to follow the
Constitution of 1824 anymore so both of these events made us mad. We
buried the cannon and removed the easiest way here from San Antonio.
It wasn't smart in my opinion, but we dug up the cannon and mounted it on
a wagon. We made a flag that said, "COME AND TAKE IT!" Dumb idea.
Martin Perfecto de Cos ordered more Mexican soldiers to help put down the
rebellion in Texas. Settlers created a volunteer army and attacked Goliad.
George Collinsworth and Ben Milam commanded the Texas force. This was
definitely the start of a war.

I haven't written in my diary in so long! I am starting to worry about
my husband. I heard through the grapevine about the March on San
Antonio and the Battle of San Antonio. I was getting nervous because
I haven't heard from him in so long. Tejanos joined our army. They
joined because they were being treated unfairly and they want to
fight back. Jim Bowie and James Fannin led a search party of 90
men. The party was attacked by 400 Mexican soldiers. Luckily, our
Texas soldiers held back the Mexican forces. Then the grass fight
occurred. Texas soldiers heard rumors that Mexican soldiers were
carrying silver to pay the Mexican troops. Our troops captured their
animals and cargo; Just to find grass in the bag. I heard that my
husband was the one to open the bag and he was very disappointed. Ben
Milam then took control of a group for the attack on San Antonio. After the
harsh battle, Texas had a victory and shooed Mexicans back to Mexico. I am
proud of our soldiers and think that we will be successful. I think that this
battle was a stepping stone in the right direction for our victory.

I never thought that I would have to write this. Susanna Dickinson
informed us of an awful battle that just occurred yesterday at the
Alamo. My husband was killed; Everyone was killed. I couldn't be more
mad at Santa Anna. I also couldn't be more depressed. James Bowie was
on his way to San Antonio to evaluate the situation. Sam Houston
recommended that the Alamo be destroyed. Bowie wouldn't let him. Davy
Crockett joined 188 men who established a fort at the Alamo.
Apparently, Crockett helped hold Mexico off for two weeks. Yesterday,
Mexico over ran the Alamo. William B. Travis led troops into the Alamo.
On March 6th he drew a line in the sand and told everyone who was willing
to die cross that line. Of course my husband walked straight over that line.
He will do anything for Texas. Susanna Dickinson and her baby were two of
four survivors. Santa Anna was the leader of the Mexican army. Santa Anna
hung the "No Quarter Flag." This means that no man will be left alive. On that
dreadful day of March 6th, Mexico invaded the Alamo. Every man was killed. Santa
Anna burned the bodies. In my opinion, Santa Anna has gone way too far this time...

This day is finally here. I finally have my own rights that no
one can take away from me. Delegates held a convention in
Washington on the Brazos. They voted to declare
independence from Spain. I heard about all of this from my
best friend Susie Burnet. Her husband, David G Burnet was
elected president of Texas! I couldn't be happier right now.
Of course I agree with independence and the constitution. I
believe in the Bill of Rights, too. I agree with importation of
slaves and no more people immigrating to Texas. The less
people, more resources for me! George Childress wrote the
Decloration of Independence; he is my new favorite person!
Lorenzo de Zavala waselected vice president because he was used to
Mexican congress. They created three branches of government;
Legislative branch, Executive branch, and Judicial branch. The
constitution stated all of our rights. I couldn't be happier. This is a huge
step for Texas.
