This book is dedicated to my grandfather, Henry Haarsma.
I will never forget laying on the floor hearing his stories of Peasy and Beansy or Carrot and Corny (which I learned later in life was the same story line).

Once there were two little girls living with their dad and mom on one side of the woods. Their grandmother lived on the other side of the woods.
One day, the mother said to the two little girls, "I would like one of you girls to go over and visit Grandmother. I'll give you a basket of cookies and some other good things and you can have a nice visit with her. Which one of you girls wants to go?"

Beansy said, "I don't want to go visit Grandmother. I don't care to go. I'd rather stay home and play with my toys."
But Peasy said, "Oh, I'd be happy to go over to Grandmother's. I like to visit with her."
So the mother got the basket all ready to go for Grandmother and gave it to Peasy and she started walking through the woods.

Pretty soon Peasy came to a stream of water, and the stream was all plugged up with dirt, sticks, and could barely run anymore.
The stream called out to Peasy and said, "Oh please Peasy will you please help me out and clear these sticks so that I can run freely down the hillside?"
Peasy said, "Oh sure! I'd love to help you out!" So she grabbed a piece of wood and started cleaning out the stream. Pretty soon it began running down the hillside again. The stream said, "Thank you, Peasy!"

Peasy picked up her basket and continued on through the woods when she came upon a fire that was just about out. And the fire said to Peasy, "Oh Peasy would you please help me get this fire started again?!" Peasy said, "Oh sure! I'd love to help you!" So she put her basket down and gathered up some dry leaves and twigs and put them on the fire. Then she grabbed bigger sticks and put them on the fire, too, and the fire began burning nicely again! And the fire said, "Thank you, Peasy!"

So Peasy picked up her basket and continued on to the edge of the woods where Grandmother lived. Grandmother was so happy to see her and said to Peasy, "I have a few things I'd like you to help me with: wash some windows, dust, and then we'll bake some cookies for you to take home." Peasy said to Grandmother, "I'd love to help you out!" So they visited together, cleaned, and baked cookies and put them in the basket to take home. Peasy said, "I'm so happy I came to visit you." And Grandmother said, "I had a great time, too, come again sometime or send Beansy to visit sometime." So Peasy left for home.

As Peasy started back through the woods and on her way home, she came back to where the fire was and noticed a cake that was just about done. The fire said, "Thank you again, Peasy, for helping me earlier! Please take this cake along with you as a thank you gift." So Peasy said 'Thank you', took the cake off the fire, put it in her basket and continued on through the woods.

Pretty soon Peasy came to the stream that was all plugged up, but this time it was running smoothly and merrily along. Next to the stream there was a brightly colored pink cloth. The stream said, "Oh Peasy, please take this nice cloth. You can have it for helping me out earlier!" So Peasy picked it up and put it in her basket and continued on home.

When she got home, Peasy said to her mother, "Look at all these nice things I got for going to Grandmother's house today!" Beansy saw all the gifts that Peasy had and said, "I'd like to go to Grandmother's house sometime, too, so that I can have all these nice things!"
So next week came around and Grandmother said, "I'd like to have one of you girls come visit me." So Beansy volunteered and Mother got some things together in a basket for Beansy to take over to Grandmother's. And Beansy went walking through the woods just like Peasy did last week.

So Beansy started walking through the woods and pretty soon she came upon the same stream that Peasy did. The stream was all cluttered up again and the water could barely get through.
The stream called out, "Oh Beansy would you please help me and clean out the stream so that I can run better down the hill?"
But Beansy said, "Oh no I ain't gonna help you ya old stream! I'd rather you didn't run at all!" And she picked up some more mud and sticks and threw them in the stream and said, "Now see how you get along!" And she picked up her basket and continued along in the woods.
