SS.4.A.8.4: Explain how tourism affects Florida's economy and growth

Welcome to St. Augustine! Did you know that St. Augustine is one of the most historic cities in Florida? In fact, it's the oldest permanent European settlement in ALL of the United States! It is located on the northeast side of Florida. Check it out!

This man over here is named Juan Ponce De León. He was the first explorer to land in Florida in 1513. When he got to this new land, he claimed it for Spain and called it Florida (which means land of flowers).
He came to search this new land for the "Fountain of Youth." It was supposed to make you young forever!

St. Augustine is really well known for its beach and its lighthouse. The lighthouse has white and black stripes and a red top. The lighthouse is 165 feet tall and has 219 steps for visitors to climb up! The lighthouse helped guide ships at night.

Another really important place to know about is St. George Street. This is a place where tourists can get something to eat at the different restaurants or go shopping. St. George street has really unique boutiques, gift shops, and even art galleries. One of my favorite places is Whetstone Chocolates (get their fudge!)

It was fun taking you around St. Augustine and telling you all about it, but now we have to get down to business and do some math problems. Do you want to help me?

Standard: MAFS.4.MD.1.1: Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...
Domain: Measurement and Data
Cognitive Demand: Lower-level demands because it involves the students reproducing equations and math formulas that they have seen before.
