Gerald the baby squirrel was hopping from tree to tree when he spotted his friend Jake digging in the leaves on the forest floor.

Gerald said "Jake, what are you doing playing with the leaves?" Jake smiled a squirrelly grin at Gerald and explained "I am looking for nuts to prepare for winter!"

Gerald asked Jake "Why do you need to collect nuts? What is Winter?" Jake laughed at Gerald but decided to explain.

Jake said "In Winter, the air gets cold and the trees lose their leaves. We need to collect nuts now to grow big and strong so that we can go to sleep and wait for the sun to come back and bring the trees back to life!"

Gerald was excited to learn about winter and decided to help Jake look for nuts. As he was moving around the leaves, he noticed that his new thicker coat kept getting in the way.

Gerald said to Jake "Look! My fur knew that winter was coming before I did and has grown thick and warm so that I can nap through the cold!"

Jake was excited for his friend and the two squirrels hunted for nuts and admired their new winter haircuts for the rest of the day.
