One day, a knight was riding along a river. He was a 

very dirty man, and sought after beautiful young 

women. He saw a lady by the river, and committed 

unfaithful acts upon her. The kingdom and entire 

countryside was very disgusted when hearing this, 

and wanted the knight to die. The king of the land 

wanted to behead the knight, but handed the decision 

over to his wife, the Queen. The Queen ordered the 

knight to go out on a quest, asking women what they 

most desire. The knight was granted twelve months 

to complete this quest, and if he didn't find the 

answer, he would die.

So the knight set off on his quest, traveling all 

over, seeking women to find the answer that would 

spare his life. The knight came to a village, where 

he saw twenty ladies dancing among the woods. 

As he approached the ladies, all but one lady left. 

The lady that stayed was old and very ugly. 

the knight approached her, and asked his question, 

"What is it that women most desire?" 

The kind old women responded, "Give me your 

hand and promise to do what I ask you to do." 

"What is it," asked the knight. "Marry me, and 

make me your wife." said the old lady. The knight 

took the lady upon his horse, and rode to the 

kingdom to proclaim to the Queen that he had 

found the answer. 

The Queen ordered that the knight say the answer. 

The knight answer, "A woman wants the self-same 

sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, 

and master." Upon hearing this, the old lady stood 

up, and stated that she had given the answer to the 

knights question.
