4.9 Organisms and environments. The student knows and understands that living organisms within an ecosystem interact with one another and with their environment. The student is expected to:
(A) investigate that most producers need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food, while consumers are dependent on other organisms for food

Producers make their own food. An example of a producer is a plant.

Producers make their own food through photosynthesis. The producers need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and other things make food. It is a chemical process that uses sunlight to turn carbon dioxide into sugars that the cell can use as energy.

Photosynthesis Process
No sunlight, water or carbon dioxide means that the plant can not go through photosynthesis. Then, the plant will have no food. If a plant does not have food, it will die.

Consumers do not need to make their own food like producers do.

Consumers eat other producers and other consumers to get their food. An example of a consumer is an animal.

Carnivores are consumers that eat animals only.
Herbivores are consumers that eat plants only.

Omnivores are consumers that eat plants and animals.
