Jack is so excited! He is going to have a lemonade stand with his mom. They are even growing their own lemons to use!
"Mom! I am so excited about the lemonade stand! But.... those lemons sure look small. How will we ever make enough lemonade with those?" Jack's excitement quickly turned to worry.

"Well, Jack..." his mom started to say with a confused look on her face, "I have done everything to make them grow but they just won't! I watered them. I fed them. I even sang to them! All the same things I did to make you grow! But still, nothing."

"Mom! Didn't you give them sunlight?!" Jack exclaimed. Don't you know that plants are producers and producers absolutely, positively need sunlight!"

"Well... you are right that plants need sunlight, but we have a window right over there," she said as she pointed to the window in the very far corner of the living room.

"No way! Plants get all of their energy from the sun. That is why sunlight is so important! The lemon tree can not grow without LOTS and LOTS of sunlight!"

Jack's mom had an idea! "Tell me everything you know about producers and maybe we will think of a solution!"
Jack loves science! He was very happy to tell her everything he learned at school.
"Well, mom...," he began, "I learned all about producers in school!"

"Producers are plants and they need three things to grow big and turn into food for animals! They need water, good soil, and LOTS of sunlight because they get their energy from the sun!

Jack's mom looked very happy. She had a big smile on her face. "Wow! You know so much about science! Now that we know about producers and what they need, do you have any ideas about how to make this lemon tree grow?"
"Yes!" Jack was so happy! He knew exactly what to do! "We can put the lemon plant right next to the window!"
"What a great idea," said mom.

One week later, Jack and his mom checked on the lemon tree. They were so surprised to see how big the lemons were growing!
"I am so surprised to see how big the lemons are growing!" said mom.
"It was a good idea to give them sunlight," said Jack.

Jack suddenly had a great idea! "What if we plant this lemon tree outside? It will get more sunlight and maybe even water from the rain. Then it will grow so big and we will have a lot of lemons for the lemonade stand!"
"What a great idea!"

Jack and his mom were pleased that their lemon tree grew big and strong because of all the sunlight.
"We can make so much lemonade now!" said Jack, jumping with excitement.

All of a sudden, two birds came down and started to eat their lemons!
"Oh no!" said Jack's mom. "Those birds are flying away with our lemons!"
"Mom..." said Jack, "I think I should teach you all about consumers next!"
