To Mr. Beaty's Class

Matt knew that something was wrong. The quiet stillness of the lake had suddenly been replaced by the loud roar of a river at flood stage! Matt could hear the chattering of his teeth and feel the tips of his ears stung with the cold.
Cold? he thought to himself. Why is it so cold all of a sudden? "Boat!" Matt cried. "We're in the boat! How...how did we get here? And it's snowing! How can it be snowing in September?" But his question went unanswered as the roar of the river drowned out his feeble cry.

Matt, Tony, Hooter, Katie and Q were horrified as they clung to the sides of the boat as it rushed down the swollen river. Matt wondered if he could help to steady their course with his oar but he was too terrified to let go of his hold on the side of the boat. Katie, tried to stand up in the middle of the boat! Matt and Hooter lunged forward to reach Katie. The sudden shift in weight made everyone fall over. Matt looked and Katie was nowhere to be found. "Katie! Katie!" he screamed, "Where are you?" But there was no reply. The snow that had been falling was mixed with freezing rain, but Matt took no notice.

"Please, Katie, answer me. Where are you?" he cried, leaning over the side of the boat. They all cried for Katie, but no reply came. Q noticed the freezing rain lashed their faces and soaked their sweatshirts. "We've got to get out of this ice jam or we'll freeze to death," he called to Matt, but Matt was too distracted to hear. He was desperate to see some sign of Katie. He felt as if a sea of blackness had swallowed her up and the thought of his little sister struggling under the icy water was more than he could bear. He sat unable to move, paralyzed with fear and grief. His eyes were filled with tears as he buried his head in his hands. "Katie, please don't be dead. Please Kate," he sobbed.
Hooter put his arms around Matt. "It's all my fault, Hoot. It's all my fault," Matt cried.
