the supposed production of living organisms from nonliving matter, as inferred from the apparent appearance of life in some supposedly sterile environments.
controlled experiment
A controlled experiment is a scientific test that is directly manipulated by a scientist, in order to test a single variable at a time. The variable being tested is the independent variable, and is adjusted to see the effects on the system being studied.

manipulated variable
A manipulated variable is the independent variable in an experiment.

Theory
a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.

Biology
the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution.

Cell
a small room in which a prisoner is locked up or in which a monk or nun sleeps.

Asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes, and almost never changes the number of chromosomes.
