It’s a hot summer day and Jennifer is outside taking pictures to post on Instagram. She was standing in front of the red flowers and posing for the camera. She flipped her hair and smiled. After she was done taking a couple pictures, she went inside, compared the pictures, found the best ones and posted them. She captioned them, “Sweet n simple ...” Two minutes later she gets a comment from some guy she never heard of saying, “Beautiful”, with heart eyes next to it. She liked the comment and replied, “Thanks”, with a heart emoji . More people started liking and commenting on her post. Jennifer had 1,945 followers on Instagram.

Jennifer
Later that night, Jennifer was watching her friend’s stories on Instagram and got a DM from the guy that commented on her post. “Hey! My name is Jonathan”. “Hey”, she replied. They began having a conversation and Jonathan kept complementing her. He told her how beautiful her smile was. He told her that he was 17. She told him that she was 16 and that she lives in Los Angeles. “No way! I live there too!”, he replied. “Maybe we should meet up some time”, Jennifer said. She waited for a response. Two hours went by and she still didn’t get an answer. Then she saw that he had read the message but still no answer. She went to bed and laid there, just thinking about how weird it was that he didn’t reply after they had been texting for almost an hour. She wondered if it was anything he had said. Afterall, she had been talking about herself too much. She told him where she went to school, her birthday, and even the town she lived in.

The next morning, Jennifer woke up to a buzz and saw a notification on her phone. It was Jonathan she thought! She opened the message and saw that he had replied. “ummm....idk I kinda have to leave town in a few days. I’m going on vacation with my family”, “Oh ok", Jennifer responded. “Maybe next time ” he said. Jennifer got ready for school and went downstairs. When Jennifer was in school, she started looking at his profile. All his pictures were of him playing basketball. He was at least 6 foot. She smiled as she scrolled through the pictures. There was one of him in front of the Hollywood sign. Her friends walked over and asked what she was doing. She told them about Jonathan and that he was a boy she had been talking to.

Alisha looked a little suspicious. “What’s wrong?”, Jennifer asked. “Nothing it’s just his profile says he plays for Bryerwood High and that’s where my brother plays.” “So, he plays for the same team? I don’t see what’s wrong with that”. Jennifer exclaimed with a little bit of an attitude. “The thing is, I’ve never seen him play on the team or sit on the bench.” “Maybe he’s new!”, Vanessa added. Jennifer agreed, “Yeah what if he is?” Alisha nodded her head, “No, no, I was just at one of the games yesterday and I didn’t see him”. “That’s weird.”, Jennifer said. Her stomach tightened and she felt a surge of anxiousness come to her. She was worried, but then thought to herself that he couldn’t have been lying to her. There was so many pictures to prove that he plays basketball, but not exactly any pictures to prove that he played for Bryerwood. None of the pictures showed him with any jerseys on, just of him in random shorts and tanks. “Just be careful ok!” Alisha told her. Jennifer nodded, “I will! Thanks for the heads up!”.

When the school day was over and the bell rang, Jennifer walked to her car and got in. She got another notification from Jonathan asking her how her day was. “It was great how about yours?”, she said. He responded, "Same mine was great! I’m about to go play some basketball.” Jennifer read the message and typed, “Cool! And hey, your bio says that you play for Bryerwood right?” Jennifer was curious to know if he was telling the truth. “Uh yea”, he explained. “How come you’re never at the games?” “Wym (what do you mean)”, he asked. “My friend’s brother plays for Bryerwood and she said that she has never seen you play.”, Jennifer texted back. “Oh, so you’re stalking me now?” Jonathan seemed upset, but Jennifer didn’t mean to offend him. “No! It's just weird.”, she said. Jonathan texted her back, “Sorry, it’s ok, I just felt like I was being interrogated. I’m new to the team and I’ve been missing the games, because I’m a little sick”. “Oh ok, I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better soon!", Jennifer replied. “Thanks!”, he said.

Jennifer put her phone away, turned on the car, and drove home. When she got home, she couldn’t tell if she believed Jonathan or not. Something seemed out of place and off about him. She told her mom about it and she didn’t seem to feel good about the situation. Her mom searched up his name online and didn’t find any results. His account only had 23 followers and she couldn’t find any of the pictures he had posted on Instagram when she looked on Google. Jennifer’s mom has a friend who works at Bryerwood as a teacher and she told Jennifer that she was going to text her. Jennifer’s mom asked her friend if she had heard of any student named Jonathan Smith and she sent a picture.
