Scoliosis is a curvature in the spine. It’s where your spine is rotated abnormally. It can go in many directions. Some spines make an “S” pattern and the hips and shoulders follow what the spine looks like. The curvature ranges from mild (less than 20°) to severe (60° or more).

Scoliosis affects the skeletal system. Which is made up of all of your 206 bones. Scoliosis mainly affects the spine.

It's very important to identify if you have scoliosis as soon as possible. Some of the signs you will see are:

-Uneven shoulders.

-One shoulder blade that appears more

prominent than the other.

-Uneven waist.

-One hip higher than the other.

The curvature of the spine can stretch, irritate, or squish nerves. It can also strain joints, causing them to become worn or inflamed. Scoliosis also affects your posture, which leads to muscles tightening or becoming tired, causing pain. As an adult, scoliosis will give severe back pain. In children, the spinal curve can increase without treatment.

It can’t be fully cured. Depending on the severity of the curve and the risk of it getting worse, scoliosis can be treated with observation, bracing, or surgery. As an adult, the only way to correct it is to do surgery. You can't use a brace as an adult because your back isn't growing anymore, so it can't be shaped. Orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons are often consulted if surgery is needed.

Surgery
