Photosynthesis is the process of transforming solar energy into chemical energy, or food for plants. Only plants can perform photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis occurs in 2 phases, the light-dependent reaction and the light-independent reaction.

Photosynthesis occurs in the plants' chloroplast. It makes the compound, glucose, which is made of carbon dioxide and water.

The light-dependent reaction is solar energy and water being absorbed and converted into chemical energy as ATP and NADPH.

The light-independent reaction, or the Calvin Cycle, is chemical energy produced in the light reaction (ATP and NADPH) used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose.

Humans and animals depend on photosynthesis because when photosynthesis occurs, it releases oxygen, which we take in and exhale carbon dioxide, what plants need to survive.

We also rely on photosynthesis because the animals we eat need the oxygen from plants to survive, otherwise no other organisms would exist and we wouldn't have food.
