Kente Cloth
Kente cloth is the most highly recognizable product in Africa. This is proved by seeing them everywhere, worn on both men and women in different ways. As you can tell, kente cloth can be used in many purposes to suit some of the people's needs in a fashionable way.
what Makes Them Unique?
Kente cloth was usually used for royalty. It was only used for leaders of political party's in the Ashanti Empire. Mostly made of gold colored lace. It was created by the Asante Tribe in the late 1600s. The cloths are a representation of history, philosophy, ethics, oral literature, religious belief, social values, and political thought of West Africa. The design is regarded as a symbol of social prestige, nobility, and cultural sophistication. there were myths and legends that the cloth was taken or inspired from a spider's web.
How Is Kente Cloth Made?
Kente cloth is woven on a horizontal strip loom in order to make its intricate designs. The cloth's colors do have meaning and symbolize something about Africa;
Black is Maturity, Spirituality, and Africa.
Blue is Harmony and Peace.
Green is Harvesting, planting, and Vegetation.
Gold is Royalty, wealth, and status.
Weft Patterns vary throughout the design;
"NkyEmfrE" is a broken pot.
"Kwadum Asa" is an empty gunpowder keg.
