Once upon a time, there were three cats riding in a car named the Lukemobile. The driver was a gray cat named Luke, the passenger was a calico named Pebbles, and the backseat driver was a black and white named Bam Bam. When they were very young, Luke had adopted Pebbles and Bam Bam into his former family of one.

One day, a second car pulled up to the Lukemobile. Its driver was a white, brindle, and often nefarious dog named Scooby.

Luke and Scooby had something of a rivalry. In the morning, when Luke was hungry, he would beat up Scooby as if committing such violence would get him fed faster. It never worked, but it made Scooby often submissive towards Luke.

"Hey, Luke, race you back to the house," Scooby called through the open window.
"You're on," Luke replied.
The race course was simple, yet very long and arduous.

The first leg of the race was the shortest, spanning nine kilometers to a perpendicular intersection. The second leg would have the drivers make a right-angle turn and continue for 40 kilometers until they reached home. Also, the most monotonous part of the race was that every single stretch of the road looked identical to the last.

Scooby raced off in his car and before Luke could take off after him, Bam Bam spoke up from the back.
Luke gave an exasperated sigh and turned.

"Luke, take a slight right turn ahead," Bam Bam said. "It's a shorter distance than driving the 49 kilometers home."
"Bam Bam, stop being a backseat driver. We're behind because of you," was Luke's scathing reply.
"I think he's right, Luke," said Pebbles.
