Dear reader,
The following pages are a reflection on a life changing event that I went through and that has since impacted my existence. It started sixteen years ago when I decided to immigrate from my home country to The U.S.A. This event has had a huge impact on my life and the lives of my close family members. This journey has been filled with all kinds of memories, feelings, happy moments, and sad moments that have shaped me as who I am today as a human being. In the following pages, I want to describe to you how a decision that one of us decides to make at some point of their life can have the biggest impact forever.
Immigration is a word that each one of us see from their own perspective. Some of us see it as a positive experience. Some of us may describe it as a separation from one's roots. However, what we would all agree about is that immigration is a big decision and does change the trajectory of one's life and personality.
Thank you for reading
Extended Metaphor Poem
Immigration is a cooking pot
Boiling, melting, burning hot
Distance is a cold pain
marking feelings like a stubborn stain
Loved ones are a dream
A memory flowing like a stream
Old home is a twisted memory
Crushing the soul like deep misery
New reality is a game like a sin
You play it , you know it
But you can never win
A blind choice is a knife
It shapes you, it hurts you
Playing with it is never safe
Old music is a tear
Shredding your heart without fear
Nostalgia is a roomate
Refusing to leave
Refusing to pay a rent
Immigration is no more a choice
You like it, or hate it
You can’t ignore its voice
Informational essay
They stood in the middle of the terminal all three of them
Loud noises, people carrying their luggage and saying goodbye to loved ones
A loud but smooth voice announcing flights departures
She held a piece of paper in her hand
Little did she know that was more than a flight ticket, it was a pass to a new life, a new existence
The usual smile left her mother’s face, instead it was replaced with a deep look of sadness
As she prepared to be separated from her only daughter
His eyes were filled with anxiety and fear, his facial features that resembled his daughters to a great extent were screaming
Informational Essay continued...
As if they wanted to say , come on let's leave this cold place, how dare you leave us, let's go back to our city, how can you leave us, and when I open the front door after a long day at work, who would jump on my shoulders?
Who would sing in the house with a careless happy voice all day long?
Who would talk nonstop all day long?
Who would dance with me in the kitchen?
Without words she could hear his begging
Her eyes seemed to be answering, yes father lets just go,
I do not want to go far away from you
I am scared from the unknown of this adventure
Informational Essay Continued...
And then suddenly she heard and announcement
Her flight would be leaving soon
In her ears her mother cries mixed with her own rising heart beats
She looked at him as tears flooded his eyes despite his desperate attempts to appear calm
Suddenly everything ended
He drove his car going back from the same road that they took early that day
And as they told her later he had never cried in his life as he cried on that trip
She sat alone in the gate waiting for her flight’s boarding
Back then, she did not know that waiting would become a major and endless event in her life
Waiting for the hours, days, months, and years until she could see again her loved ones who were waiting for her too.
Years have passed until the day when those who waited for her left for good
And those left are the ones who got used to her being far far away
Double Voice Poem
I am an immigrant I am an immigrant
I left my home I left to build a home
I left my people I found my freedom
I broke my promise I have no regrets
To my roots that I miss this is where I will finally rest
English is my second language English is my second language
I am a second citizen I am a respected human being
Torn between two cultures who got a chance for a new life
I open my eyes in the morning I open my eyes in the morning
To people I don’t recognize to a dream that I worked for
I don’t see my soul in their eyes a dream of which I want more and more
