Chapter 1
Herding sheep
‘Move you silly sheep!’ barked Hunter, ‘ oh how I wish all your woolly woof goodness was my bed’. It was a frosty Autumn morning, and clouds covered the sky like a blanket. Hunter and his owner woke up at 3:15 that morning. Hunter was so tired. He didn't want to herd sheep. On a normal day they woke up whenever they woke up, normally at 7: 56 in the morning. Hunter had just gotten out of bed 25 minutes ago, and was now herding 178 sheep into a paddock 5 kilometers away
from where he was presently. ‘Hunter there boy, over there, 6 sheep are going the wrong direction.’ Hunter was as tired as a koala that hadn’t slept for 24 hours. Hunter’s owner, David Sorenson, hadn't even fed Hunter that morning.Hunter started whining, he is starving and is very very very very tired. Hunter stopped running and started walking his fast walk, then his normal walk, then his slow walk, then his very very very very slow walk. His owner didn’t even realise Hunter had slowed down. Suddenly Hunter collapsed to the ground, he was fast asleep. 7 hours later.. Hunter woke up at 10:00 that day to find he was still in the paddock.
His owner was sitting next to him and was softly patting him. Hunter’s tummy rumbled. ‘Now we have to walk home’ thought Hunter, but he was lucky . It seemed as if his owner had carried him home.
Chapter 2
Out in the city
Hunter ran to his food bowl. David Sorenson lived with his wife, Mary and child, Kate. Kate is a sweet, friendly and kind 9 year-old girl and she absolutely adores Hunter. Kate was the one who named Hunter. Each night, Kate sits down near the fireplace with Hunter on her lap. Hunter loves it when she does that. The Sorenson family lived in the country and had two neighbours, the Millichamp family and the Clark family. The Millichamp family had 2 cats called Spiky and Oliver,
3 chickens that don’t have names and lots and lots of cows that don’t have names . The Clark family had 1 dog called Huffy and 2 goldfish called Sunnyocean and Fishywishy. Every day Hunter and Huffy would go and play in the paddock all day long. David went inside the door and got a cup full of dog food and emptied it into Hunter’s food bowl. ‘ Dad, Dad I can’t wait to go to the city!!!!!’ shouted Kate, ‘but will Hunter be allowed in the accommodation?’ ‘Yes dear, I talked to the owner and he said he adores dogs and it brings him to tears if a dog doesn’t visit or stay, so he is extremely happy that Hunter is coming with us.” said David. ‘Honey you’ve forgotten your hairbrush’ said Mary Sorenson. ‘ Oh,
yeah I thought I had forgotten something’ said Kate
sweetly. Hunter heard what they said: Hunter and them were going to the city. But once Oliver the cat had told Hunter:
‘Out in the city there are cars that crash and can run over things. Out in the city there are huge buildings that can fall over and crash on you..’
Chapter 3
‘Say goodbye to Spikey and that’
David, Kate and Mary Sorenson put all the luggage in the car. David rushed back inside to get Hunter some dog food (Hunter’s favourite dog food, Purina beneful grain free ) and a huge 6 litre water holder. ‘Wait up, Dad,’ said Kate, ‘ Hunter looks like he wants to say goodbye to Huffy, Spikey and Oliver. Can we let him?’ ‘ Oh, sorry Kate we do need to leave’
said David. ‘ Oh, please Dad. Please let Hunter see the cats and Huffy. Please?’ ‘Come on let Hunter do it. He’s not gonna see them for 2 weeks.’ Said Mary Sorenson. ‘Wait again’ said Kate ‘do you have Hunter’s bed?’
‘Yep’ replied David. ‘Dear if you're going to take Hunter to Huffy and Oliver and that, go and do it now. We only have 20 minutes until we leave.’
Said Mary. ‘Ok’ said Kate excitedly. She put Hunter’s lead on and walked Hunter to the Millichamp family to see their two extremely cute cats. ‘Woof, Spikey! Oliver!’ said Hunter. But since he was talking dog language, Kate just thought that they were woofing and meowing. ‘Meow’ said Spikey. ‘ Oliver, Spikey’ said Hunter, shaking all over. ‘ I-I’m g-g-going t-to t-
t-the c-c-c-c-city’ said Hunter as if he was shivering. ‘ Oh my meow!’ said Oliver. ‘ Good luck’ said Spikey. ‘The accommodation is for dogs and people, though’ said Hunter. ‘ Oh puurrfect.’ said Spikey. ‘Come on Hunter,’ Kate said. Kate walked Hunter over to the Clark family. ‘ Hi Hunter’ said Huffy. ‘ Woof’ said Hunter. ‘ I-I’m g-g-going t-t-t-to t-t-the c-c-c-c-c-c-city.’ said Hunter. ‘ Oh’ said Huffy. There was a long silence. It kept going on and on. But then Huffy broke it. ‘What is a city?’ Huffy said. ‘Oh nevermind’ said Hunter. Then Spikey ran over to Hunter and Huffy. ‘A city is a place where millions and millions of people live. There are cars that can crash and run over things. In-’ Hunter interrupted Spikey and said: ‘ Spikey! Spikey! Oliver told me that once! Now
carry on, carry on Spikey’ ‘ MEOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ shouted Spikey, ‘ DON’T INTERRUPT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ ‘Hunter, here boy! We are going to the city now’ said Kate.
Chapter 4
Arriving at the city
Kate walked Hunter home. It had now been an hour since Hunter had woken up, but he was still sleepy. After all, David does put Hunter to bed when he goes to bed, usually at midnight. Mary Sorenson put Hunter in his crate, right next to the 3 suitcases in the boot of the car. She locked Hunter in his crate. They put on their seat belts and pulled out of the garage. Hunter looked out the window. Spikey, Oliver and Huffy were lined up outside smiling. ‘Bye Hunter!!!!! Hope you have a
wooftastic trip!’ Yelled Huffy excitedly. ‘ Good bye, Hunter hope you have a puurrfect trip’ said Spikey and Oliver together. ‘Bye guys!!!!!!!!’ woofed Hunter. He turned back to the front of the car and thought: I hope all goes well at the city.
‘Where will we be going in the city tomorrow? Can we go on that roller coaster that you showed me? It looks fun!’ said Kate. ‘ Maybe not tomorrow dear, the day after.’ said Mary happily. The family then started to sing: We're going to the city, Auckland it will be! 5 hours till we get there, but that's OK ‘cos we don’t care!! We’ll look at the sky tower.. They kept singing for about 20 minutes then Kate fell asleep, so David and Mary kept quiet. Two minutes after that, Hunter fell asleep too. He dreamed of huge buildings that touched the clouds and they all fell on him. A dozen, all at once. 5 hours later Hunter woke up to a horrible sight: there were cars everywhere, millions of them. He even saw a bird get run over. Hunter shivered, he was scared. ‘ How many minutes till
we get to the hotel, Dad? I’m itching to see it!’ said Kate. ‘ Oh about 10 minutes’ said David. ‘Kate probably woke up ages ago’ thought Hunter.
Chapter 5
The hotel
The 10 minutes were very short, thought hunter when Kate got Hunter out of the boring crate. Hunter had spent most of his time asleep in his boring, yet comfortable, crate. David put Hunter on the lead and the family went to sign in to the hotel. It was a very fancy hotel and the hotel was warm. It was named: The Magnificent. ‘ Wow’ said Kate, Amazed, ‘ there are spa pools and water slides!’
‘Be quiet, Kate’ said Mary, ‘ Dad is trying to sign us in’.
