Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful Princess 

named Makenzie.   She lived in a far away land, in a 

large castle with her parents, King Danny and 

Queen Kadence.   The Royal Family ruled over the 

kingdom and all the people of the land loved them.              

Princess Makenzie had everything a young girl 

could dream of but she longed for someone her age 

to play with.   Every night Princess Makenzie would 

look out her castle window and wish for a play 

mate. 

Then one day the Princess noticed a strange round ball 

glowing in the night sky.   She wondered what this strange 

object could be.

The next morning at breakfast, she told the King and Queen 

about her discovery.  

When Princess Makenzie went to bed that night she again 

noticed the glowing ball in the sky.   She decided to name the 

glowing ball the Moon. 

Princess Makenzie made the moon her friend and began 

telling it stories and her dreams.   But one night things were 

different. When Makenzie went to bed the moons shape had 

changed. A few nights later it changed again.   This 

happened eight times.   Makenzie was starting to get very 

confused.   Then one night she looked out her window and 

the moon was gone.  

Princess Makenzie began to record what the moon was 

doing.   She decided to call the changes the moon made 

phases.   She noticed it took the moon 28 days to go through 

the cycle.

The first phase she named was called the 

New Moon.   This was the phase when the 

moon could not be seen in the sky.
