This book is dedicated to my dad.

On a beautiful summer day, firefighter Dave is playing catch with his son. They throw the ball back and forth with the loud sound of their gloves popping every time they catch the ball.

All of a sudden Dave’s pager goes off. A deep man's voice can be heard telling Dave where a house is on fire.

There is a dwelling fire at 48 Constitution Ave. Santa Cruz, CA

He hops into his red pickup truck and begins to drive to the fire station. He also turns on his lights so other cars know he needs to get past them because of the emergency.

Each car pulls over to the side of the road so Dave can get to the fire station sooner. With the fire station in sight he can see the big bay doors open with the firetrucks all ready to leave.

As he walks into the station he sees all of the other firemen getting ready to leave. He knows that he needs to get ready fast because every second counts.

Dave puts his feet into his boots that have his pants on top and ready for him to just pull up. With his pants pulled up he then puts on his fire protective hood to keep his neck and head from getting hurt. Next he slips on his jacket before putting on his gloves.

He and the other firemen climb into the trucks and sit in the seats. Dave is the driver of Engine 17 chemical truck.

With all the firemen in the trucks they start the loud engines, turn on the flashing lights and the piercing sirens.

The firetrucks all head towards the enormous cloud of smoke coming from the burning building. It reached so high in the sky you could see it for miles.

When Dave arrives at the house he could feel the heat from the burning hot fire. All of the firefighters get out of their trucks and proceed to do their jobs to stop the fire.

First they need to make sure there is no one in the house before they put water on the fire. Dave and a couple other firefighters head into the building to get anyone out. When they get inside they hear a woman screaming for help.

All of them rush towards her voice trying to dodge all of the fire around them. When they get to her she is so grateful to see them. Dave asks her if there are any other people in the house. The woman responds by telling him that her son is in his room and she was not able to get to him.

The two other firefighters take the woman out of the house safely, but Dave stays to find her son. He does not know where to go to find the son. All he knows is he needs to act fast because the fire is blocking out more and more.
